Hi. Moved from Canada and have been a Roosters fan for a couple of seasons. Feel like i have finally grasped this great game.
My favorite team is anyone with Benji marshal but since i live in Bondi the chooks it is.
I think jwh and jake friend are the core of this team and if maloney can excite skd then the side has a real balance that is exciting to think of.
Having never played the game i struggle to accept how, despite the extraordinary talent in the NRL, there are few dominant halves. Having watched Lockyer at the end of his career and obviously without anything near his peak powers, the formula seems simple. Without to much extravagance he organised his forwards for 4 tackles and laid out one or two well constructed plays at the end. Watching a Brisbane game you were never in any doubt who was in command. Thurston, Prince, C Smith , and to a lesser extent benji do this. Whatever the reult they have asserted themselves on the game.
Our halves fail to do this. Pearce simply does not seem to have the "personality" to control. His on field temperament seems better suited to a hooker who just gets on with it. Braith reminds me of Sutton. Both are big and seem to have a natural talent that gives them time when ball is in hand, but both mysteriously do very little to fulfill this promise. Braith seems unlikey to consistently set up tries.
I fear this year is going to be more about us hanging in rather than forging our own path.

No, it isn't the personality that is the problem.
The team can't understand Jr Jr.
He has been taking English lessons in the off season so expect to see some improvement.
Welcome to the roller coaster ride that is the Roosters.

The things that makes Benji, Thurston and Cronk such good halves and so far ahead of the rest is that their game is strong in all aspects. They have a good footy head, great passing game, good running game and a great kicking game. These days it is hard to find a half with all these qualities, many halves tend to focus on a particular part of their game and make this their strength (eg sowards kicking game). Also the thing which sets these halves apart is they play on instinct, they know what to do at the right time (eg pass or run the ball). This is something which cant really be learnt, it just comes naturally to some people. You mentioned Lockyer in your comment, the reason why he was so good even in his last season was he somehow knew where to be at the right time and knew when to pass at the right time! Even tho he wasnt physically imposing or particularly fast he could still play at that elite level.

Although I like Pearce I dont think he will be anything special in the halves, he lacks creativity and plays a fairly conservative game. An option could be to bulk him up and move him to lock, but I like him and would personally want him to stay in the halves but bring in another half who has a bit more flair and unpredictability in their game. Maloney should do this next season.

Anyway thats just my thoughts on what makes a good half Im sure many disagree, but this is purely just my opinion
