No it doesn't make it OK, and I've never suggested it does. It's an unfortunate part of the game that one must put up with when entering. If they do not like it, then they chose the wrong career. They can choose to leave and put up with anonymity at any time, as well as the salaries.

The fact of the matter is, without the popularity, without the image... None of these guys would be on the money they are. Without those fans that care, either hate or love the side, they would not get that paycheck.

Moron's who abuse footy players, are probably moron's in general.

There are quite a few differences in the example that you set out.

Swimming is not a team sport, people who have played team sports in their life - especially either for the footy codes can relay the feeling of celebration after the win. You just want to get out and celebrate the win with your mates who have just put their body on the line for you. This is the drinking culture that everyone speaks of - it has been around since rugby league has existed.

Secondly, swimming stars don't enjoy the spotlight that most league players get. Girls flock to you, men admire you, for any man that is a good feeling and you want to be around that environment and unfortunately it goes hand in hand with drinking.
I agree with you. Team sports are different... I think during the soccer world cup when Kewell or something screwed up a key move (although they still won) I remember Hiddink saying "yeah I don't care... these things happen, we'll just have a beer and talk about it a bit..."

Hmmm... dunno about footy being different. Thorpie or Phelps or something... they're better known and will get more girls chasing them than some footy guy. I'd say only League fans can identify most of the players, whereas most could identify people from individual sports legends from now and the past (say jai taurima, cathy freeman, ian thorpe, steve hooker, grant hackett, Cadel Evans, John Steffensen...etc) you'd probably identify them if you saw them out partying because they've all been national hero's, whereas Nate Myles, Jake Friend or Mitchell Pearce... no offence, but you'd probably only know them if you're a Roosters fan... most would just mistake them for some big boof-heads if they were being a dickhead at a club.

                ---

I think one problem for league players could be they DON'T get that much money... top ones are on a few hundred grand a year.

On the other hand guys like Ronaldo who get paid $200 000 000 just to change clubs are insanely wealthy, and will not be seen down at the local club... they'll be off at some exclusive place shagging Paris Hilton, and all the media will know is that they went home together in a car. Our footy players don't have that privacy, and I would guess get busted for pretty petty things compared with a lot of sports personalities who are paid a LOT more.

I can think of a handful of friends (doctors, lawyers, bankers...etc) who would be on about the same as the top League players (some definitely more) however nobody outside their business circles would really know them so there's no media spotlight on them. They can go out and do whatever the hell they like... when I've been out with one in particular... he's a DJ on weekends (has a high-paid office job during the week), smokes weed as soon as he gets home from work (I lived with him for 6 months so have seen), and he'll always pop a cocktail of pills on the weekends. Now... he's on about 500 grand a year... nobody treats him like a celebrity (because he isn't one)... to be honest the only reason we've been kicked out of clubs is because they think we're too poor. To be honest I'd be on what a bunch of junior players would be on (probably same as Jake Friend or something) and he's getting more than your top League stars.

Then again, we don't punch people or doodoo in public... if we did, I think people would know. My mate's a stoner and I'm a heavy drinker... but to be honest nobody cares about that so long as it doesn't result in us doing stupid stuff!

The crux of it all John, the almighty dollar.

I am sick to death of players being criticised for what the may or may not earn.

The majority of players never reach the real big money anyway, yet we begrudge and judge them on what we THINK they earn.

                  Why???

I can only guess most of the punters are jealous.

The vast majority LOVE playing footy 1st. The vast minority are actually lucky/good enough to earn a decent wadd from doing what they LOVE.

No-one goes in with the expectation they will become elite or earn big $$$ from footy.

But we feel we can have a piece of them because some actually do make it.

Its a sick world we live in. These days with the media saturation we build these blokes into Gods and just wait to get into them. Just so we can whinge cos they may earn well.

Fark me Im glad I grew up when footy players were just that, footy players. Not sociallites whose personal lives are held to cross examination cos they earn well.

The best part I found with player footy/cricket was getting wasted after the game.

JB does footy choose you or do you choose footy????

Have you forgotten the joy of the team, of achieving a common goal, playing the game with your chinas????

I actually believe most players are grateful they can earn from what they love. They dont think of the consequenses of a night out on the piss, did you in your 20s???

Fark the cashola side of it. Take the money away and a TRUE footballer will still play, its what they love to do.

We live in strange times. The rules have changed since SL and NewsLTDs takeover. They upped the ante cash wise and theyve upped the ante with the medias treatment of players. Theyve made this situation (similar to what theyve done to the rules of our game).

The mug punter just reads what they print and pass judgement, whether its true or not.

Me, I just drink piss, its quite fun actually.

You've either got it or you don't, but all of them know what they're signing up for when that first grade contract comes around.

No doubt, but when I was blind in my 20's, I knew not to call the ex (or picking up the ugly one for the team) or I'd regret it in the morning. Same thing here, retaliate to anyone being a dickhead, or being a dickhead yourself, and you know you'll regret it in the morning.

With the commitments to the media, training and nutrition you'll be lucky to field one side in the NRL without the money these days. No one would be able to afford to play the game and meet those commitments.

No doubt, but it's the state of play right now. You can't avoid it, and if you do anything wrong off the field, there is a good chance your face will be plastered on the back page tomorrow. As I said, the players know what they're getting into, even for the love of the game, if they can't handle it, go back to playing it as an amateur and get another job.

I see no problem with this unless a guy's in a relationship, and cheating on his partner.

Big fan of brothels... guys can pay for what they want rather than hassling girls in clubs. Probably get smoked for saying this (because of course nobody does it *cough cough* just like nobody bats, or looks up porn on the internet...etc) but I went to a few before I was married. Being single sometimes it was just relaxing... you get to choose somebody who's beautiful and willing (for a price.)

I remember after 1 particular break-up it really helped me get back on my feet. Cost me about $1200 or something... had an overnight session with a stunner... mainly just talked, then had some fun.

The only problem I can see is if it's something illegal (which it isn't) or if they're cheating on somebody.

Actually prostitution is illegal, it's just often overlooked. There are licensed brothels, but things such as "outcalls" are illegal in the eyes of the law.

I won't bother replying to the rest of the post as I've never gone there, the allure of paying for sex with someone who probably shagged 20 guys that week and not to mention what STD's they may or may not have, I can't say it really appeals to me.

For 1200 bucks.....There'd be no small talk or any crap like that. The only break she'd get was when she needed to come up for some air.
