Soward leads the NRL in linebreaks for halves, alongside his halves partner Hornby. Funnily enough, linebreaks don't count if you scoop up a loose ball behind the play, only if you break through the line.

The biggest difference between the two is that when Soward makes a linebreak, no one catches him. But his ability to take it to the line this year has been his biggest improvement, as indicative of his linebreak assists where he is sitting at equal 5th with 11, Thurston leading with 18. Pearce is down at 21st with 5. Soward averages 82m a game (10th), Pearce 43m (43rd)... That includes anyone that has played in the halves, so the likes of Hayne and Inglis are in there as well, the only genuine half ahead is Roberts.

Passing has always been Pearces strength, this year he has been doing it well before the line though, making the play much easier to read. Soward on the otherhand, it was probably his main weakness, the ability to fire a quick ball, but it has improved significantly this year, most of his try assists have come through the hands, not off his boot. His 3 against us is a reflection of that.

Pearce has never hit the turf as consistently as Soward has with his long kicking, you could probably argue that he has a longer boot, but Soward has always been far more accurate in placing his kicks. This year the standing back tactic has improved that tenfold, but there is nothing stopping Pearce from doing it either and I'm surprised more players don't, any halves with some pace, which Pearce does are not disadvantaged by standing further back.

I can't remember him missing one all year, and he does at least one every game. He's the best I've seen at it in the last 20 years this year.

Soward is a little speed hump just as Sandow, the only difference is that Soward this year is playing in a team in which the forwards are bending the defensive line giving him all the time in the world to show his chip and chase skills.

Not enough room on Soward's bandwagon for everyone.

JB, the line breaks that Soward boasts are from supporting play, not actually taking on the line himself. He is great at doing it, however Saints are great overall in 2nd phase play - something the Roosters don't have much of this year.
He has scored once or twice from running the ball close to the line but it was more or less tired and lazy defence as opposed to outplaying it. I still think Pearce, ball in hand is more dangerous, especially from close where he can really put the step on.

I'm not crapping on the bloke, i think he is talented as ****. However if i had to start an organisation from scratch tomorrow, i'd pick Pearce to build the club around.

I do like the way the milkman has brought back the chip and chase.
Its a great part of football that hasn't been around enough.
