  • Uncle Nick can you please employ....

The Panthers strength and conditioning team.

They seem to go years without a serious injury where as we get a few back and then a couple more take their place. surely it can't be just bad luck can it?

We just replaced the strength and conditioning team this year.

And touch wood, I think we’ve had a much better year so far than the previous 2 seasons.

Reckon our fitness has been very good. Come over the top of teams even after being on back foot in a number of losses. Execution has let us down not conditioning.

But yes, Panthers look inhuman at times

You should have touched wood last week but imagine having the same line up all year.

It’s mainly a combination of luck and depth in my opinion. We had plenty of both in 18/19 but not so much of either after that. Penrith have been having a great run of luck with injuries but they also have great depth which helps a lot when someone like Cleary gets injured which did happen for a large chunk of last year.

Unfortunately thins like ACL and fractures aren’t necessarily related to strength and conditioning though.

Risk of sustaining a 3rd ACL after having in professional sports athletes under 25 is 30-40%, unfortunately for Billy those numbers get worse for the 4th. For context Same Mckendry did his ACL 3 times under the same head of strength and co-ordinating at Penrith and he’s very highly regarded as evidenced by this thread.

I have thought about our injury wows for a few years now and tried to understand what is happening and have come to this conclusion. I feel that we have been playing at 100% of our capacity and in doing so we have been pushing ourselves (players that is) to the limit. On the other hand however the panthers are such a strong team that they play at about 80% of their potential and as such do not get injured. If we take the analogy of a car, something that I am very au fait with, if we continually drive our car and red line it every time then something will give way, ie gear box, transmission, rings, bearing etc. However if you drove this car within normal limits and not red lined it every time then this car will last a lot longer and not break down. This is my take on the issue and the only way that I can reconcile why we have been so injury prone.

there must be expert opinion on how to maximise your chances of avoiding acls. we're probably following it but maybe there are other things we can do. don't know what the average acls a club can expect in a year is

I thought there were few moments towards the back end of the match in round 16 against Penriff (even though we lost) where we actually looked like we had the upper-hand. The Riff boys looked gassed and tired there for a bit until their 14th man on the field (the ref) provided some assistance. They are well conditioned and they are overall a much more younger side. You can't beat age/youth in this game but in that match we did look on-par with them from a fitness point of view !

I think we do look much more fitter now compared to the start of the season but not sure about our performance and training ... we're still getting injuries across the board.

Thoroughly agree, I'd go back and watch it again if it weren't for the result..

It's mostly about time in rehab and strength building before you return to competition. My daughters fiancé (at the time) did his ACL about 2 years ago. He plays Rugby in the Brumbies system, and was treated by the Brumbies specialist. He was told that he could return to playing after 6 months, with approx 50% chance of recurrence. For each month he waited beyond the first 6, the chances dropped by roughly 10%, with the best outcomes occurring after waiting a full year to return to playing.

Billy is on his 3rd ACL injury, but it's not all on the same knee. He had done each knee once before this latest one, so at least it is his second on that knee, not his 3rd.

I thought we had a pretty bad run in 2019 as well?

2020 was bad and last year was off the scales bad.

I wonder whether a lot of exhaustion from defending all the time adds to the high injury rates. Combination of all our turnovers and those infuriating 6 agains.
