Perhaps the title of this thread should be can Robbo explain to me but given I am unlikely to ask him any time soon, this is the best we can do.
What on earth is the reason Robbo insists on playing Hutch on the bench every week, basically forfeiting a spot in the 17. Drew is a capable if not solid half and provides solid injury cover and squad depth. However, if he isn't playing 6 or 7 he has absolutely zero value to us in the 17 given that he gets 5-10 mins every game playing at dummy half. What is the purpose of forfeiting size and grunt off the bench to allow for a coaches favourite back up half to play 10 mins a game, usually when the game is gone?
I think a Terrell May will develop better playing those 10-15 stints and keeps our forwards punching for the 80. He will be needed in the future as our middles get older (JWH) or leave (SST). This is even more the case given we are running with Watson on the bench, who provides that utility role and smaller faster body through the middle.
The scenario is either we are winning by a lot or the game is gone and we bring him on for a meaningless 7 minute cameo or the game is tight and in the balance and we don't bring him on at all because he has no role in the final stages of the game. Just seems a bizarre and baffling decision that seems to happen every week.
I want to preface saying I have absolutely nothing against Hutch as a human being or even as a footy player, particularly given he tries his guts out and does his best for the RWB. If Robbo played him in the starting halves as cover I would have no issues, he is a capable hand and we have seem him take games on as a half particularly the back end of last year with the injury plague. But on the bench, his limited attributes are stiffled even further. A real head scratcher for me.
