  • Can anybody explain this to me??

Perhaps the title of this thread should be can Robbo explain to me but given I am unlikely to ask him any time soon, this is the best we can do.

What on earth is the reason Robbo insists on playing Hutch on the bench every week, basically forfeiting a spot in the 17. Drew is a capable if not solid half and provides solid injury cover and squad depth. However, if he isn't playing 6 or 7 he has absolutely zero value to us in the 17 given that he gets 5-10 mins every game playing at dummy half. What is the purpose of forfeiting size and grunt off the bench to allow for a coaches favourite back up half to play 10 mins a game, usually when the game is gone?

I think a Terrell May will develop better playing those 10-15 stints and keeps our forwards punching for the 80. He will be needed in the future as our middles get older (JWH) or leave (SST). This is even more the case given we are running with Watson on the bench, who provides that utility role and smaller faster body through the middle.

The scenario is either we are winning by a lot or the game is gone and we bring him on for a meaningless 7 minute cameo or the game is tight and in the balance and we don't bring him on at all because he has no role in the final stages of the game. Just seems a bizarre and baffling decision that seems to happen every week.

I want to preface saying I have absolutely nothing against Hutch as a human being or even as a footy player, particularly given he tries his guts out and does his best for the RWB. If Robbo played him in the starting halves as cover I would have no issues, he is a capable hand and we have seem him take games on as a half particularly the back end of last year with the injury plague. But on the bench, his limited attributes are stiffled even further. A real head scratcher for me.

I'm guessing that his tactic of using two utilities is just that... to add more utility value to our game.

We seem to get a lot of injuries, which are inevitable in the NRL given its inherent nature. I'd say Robbo prefers having a couple of dudes who can cover what... 3, 4, 6, 7, 11, 12 and 13 when needed ahead of having single-position players on the bench (unless they're say Lodge and Siua kinda quality, which the Bears' forwards are not).

This season's been clunky but I think Hutcho's becoming Mr Stable. He won't win you a game on his own, but he also won't lose you a game outta incompetence/emotion. Dare I say he's a bit like a Cronk, just without the touch of class. He's stable and doesn't get overwhelmed by emotion though, which is important to our current squad.

That and I'd say Hutcho has the support of the dressing room. He's well liked and everybody in the RWB likes playing with him. While intangible, I think this is pretty priceless.

I can’t fault what you’re saying as I am a fan of Hutchinson but not the way he has been used especially in last 2 games. Our props depth isn’t being tested. We let suluka-Fifita go and tuku has been off the scene for a while. We signed May then Lodge to cover only to have SST injured band Collins having concussion issues.
Fletcher Baker is our only depth prop at the moment and we need him and May to really step up to help JWH because Egan is no prop ( a great forward) and if we’re to play the other Butcher as prop , then we are in deep kaka.

Agree Huncho. Gotta get our bench bigger. A huge test for us next week. Brisbane are a good side. Robinson said before he signed Lodge that we needed to get our bench bigger. GO ROOSTERS.

The bench nowadays is moving towards having utility players that can play both back and forward roles

2 props on the bench will stay the same most likely and 2 utility players will be the optimum bench

Watson for instance can play half back , 5/8 , centre , fullback . dummy half , backrow-lock

Hutch for instance can play half back , 5/8 , centre . dummy half and backrow-lock.

Watson is no longer the second dummy half with that role now being undertaken by Hutch who may or may not get limited game time depending on how long Verrills plays if Hutch is only used in that capacity.

Last night was the least minutes (8) that Hutch has played all season though- Verrills in the last 3 games has played 80/80 and last night 72 minutes.

          https://www.roosters.com.au/teams/te...rew-hutchison/

Robbo is not keen on running or kicking dummy halves usually but Hutch adds a kicking game to the dummy half role when he plays that position and even a running game as we saw last night with a couple of deft darts from dummy half.

There was a lot of banter about having an outside back on the bench to cover any injuries to outside backs - if no injuries or on the day playing issues requiring an outside back to be replaced then that would be a wasted bench spot . mmm remember when Robbo had Toops on the bench during the 2017 finals series

I am wondering who is in line to replace E Butcher who will miss 1 week due to an unnecessary tackle right on full time - JWH was fortunate to escape with only a fine- SST will come in for Collins who will be missing for an unknown period one suggests,

I don't mind the tactic. Watson has gone well as a mobile forward and Hutch being used as an extra hooker. A taste of what will happen next year with Cheese.

And we will have a bigger bench as well once all our forwards are fit. Two of JWH/SST/Lodge/Collins. The only thing I am a bit iffy about is I believe Egan needs to fit in somewhere.

I just dont get how we signed May and he has seen next to no minutes or game time since. Hutch is getting 10min of dead time, May could make a contribution and enhance his development even if he got 15min

Where is Baker?? Not a mention of him anywhere from the Bears to Injury reports....Maybe personal leave but nice of the club to tell us? maybe singed elsewhere and are keeping him out of the dressing room.

The Roosters site is very poor for any up to date info about players - contracts/injuries and recovery etc.

I follow other teams in other sports such as Richmond (AFL) / Atlanta Braves (MLB) / New England Patriots (NFL) / Nottingham Forest (EPL) and their sites have a stack of info about the team and players etc etc including about players injuries/ recover and rehab etc etc.

As far as Baker goes - injured/ sitting out the season/signed with someone else - nothing concrete on any of these rumours - Bears have the bye this week

This is 100% my main issue with Hutch being on the bench. Apart from 1 or 2 dropped balls, May has been really solid in the limited mins he's played.

See Hutch's game time this year below- yes only 8 minutes last night but that was a one off this season - Dogs game 14 minutes was the next lowest and Dragons 16 minutes - but apart from those 3 he has had solid game time this season including 2 -80 minute games and one 78 minute game

I think Hutch will see a lot of game time for the bears next year.
We'll probably have two props, Verrills and Watson on the bench.

Reckon Hutch is seen as the utility and Watson purely a forward now.

You must be happy about Forest getting back up to the Prem mun. You may even get Jimmy Garner back on loan from my reds.

Incidentally I asked the club why they don't provide time frames on their injury report early this week....crickets...
