When I was growing up my Father made me play soccer if I didn’t he would not let me play footy He also used to take me to the park to kick a soccer ball around and used to have me aim at trees garbage bins a swing sometimes if I was lucky enough we would go where there were goal posts snd hed have me aim at those. Anyway I became quite a good shot from this practice and would score goals as a defender when a chance came my way.

Years later by chance when playing footy I found out this made me a very good goal kicker. I took over kicking one week when the kid who was kicking didn’t play Didn’t miss a shot. From then on I also practiced my goal kicking from everywhere I would try kick them from half way without much success couldn’t quite get the distance but found myself hiring the cross bar a few times. Then in a game we were playing one day we were behinc by a point in the dying stages and we got a penalty about two metes past the half way line. I said to the captain I think I can kick this but told him to tell the othrrs to chase through on her kick as I’d hit the cross bar quite a few times when practicing I took the kick hit it well but it hit dropped short and hit the cross bar one of the boys chasing through got the ball and off the rebound and scored and we won the game.

Practice is very important as whilst it doesn’t quite make you perfect it makes you know your capabilities.

Do you have any coffee mugs with you kicking a goal on them?

Speaking of bargains. Sammy’s value must be rising daily. How we can still afford him in the next few years. No doubt a QLD based club will come knocking.

Yes but I’m confident we will keep hold of him

We are in for a couple of great weeks if Sammy can leapfrog Val Holmes

Sammy has definitely got a bit stronger from last year where he struggled to get the distance when kicking from the sideline. Give him a couple more pre seasons and he will continue to get better as a player and goal kicker.

I for one am hoping that Sammy doesn't catch Holmes because Holmes puts on a fortune against the vermin.

even at the beginning of this season he was struggling but, as expected, he's really starting to hit his stride now. the bloke's a ball whisperer

I feel like Sammy quietly crept up the table. Outstanding effort and just shows the enormous improvement in his goal kicking and our teams form.

Mitch is getting himself a haul tonight against the ponies but Sam is still clear of him. I don't remember if Sam has played down in Melbourne...whole new ball game down there at that stadium..
