Absolute rubbish. The Fairfax press is as bad if not worse than the Murdoch press.
Jake Friend too as he was boarding with friends of mine for 2 years as soon as Artie discovered him. He completed his HSC down here and did really well also as he has a high IQ. I mentioned a few weeks back, with all due respect to the Noosa Pirates, it was Easts who made him a champion..

Brilliant article. Loved it. One of the best hatred of Easts I've read.

I hope every rugby league supporter reads it and it eats them all away inside.

          Boom boom boom......EASTS!!!!!

He makes some fair points as far as the competitiveness of the comp going forward- Although teams such as the Knights/Wests Tigers should be going better than what they are when you look at their junior numbers/areas and even the Dragons whose junior area takes in the Illawarra/South Coast right down to the Vic border.

His idea of a points system would be like the 1991 Internal draft Federal court case and be deemed a restrictive measure of where employees can ply their trade i.e an unreasonable restraint of trade

Would an external draft be viewed the same way by the courts ? - The AFL has an external draft only - new nominees (players who have turned 18) and unassigned/de-listed players.

Many sports in America for an example have external drafts - i.e MLB/NFL/NBA/WNBA/NHL

Of course if such a draft came in (external draft) would clubs be willing to spend the money on junior development knowing that when these player turn 18 they could be drafted by other NRL clubs under a NRL External Draft - would compensating clubs in such circumstances be a workable option ?

I think the NRL has to at least look at an External Draft though as broadcasters would certainly want a competitive comp from round 1 to round 25 for the money they are paying.

In moving to a 17 team comp in 2023 it may also be an opportunity to revisit a 10 team final series with the last two final places ( 9 and 10) filled by wild card game winners i.e 9 vs 12 and 10 vs 11 so the comp remains competitive right till the end.

I think it's the lack of experienced coaches to go around all the teams and not so much the even distribution of quality players. The more teams join the competition, the more top notch coaches are needed.

the salary cap makes the comp more of a level playing field than if there was no salary cap but it's still up to clubs to get their acts together not to mention that excellence is something to be encouraged and populist mediocrity nothing to be proud of
what happens if a player from one team who takes up less points out performs another teams player who is worth more points?

Do we strip points off the successful team for identifying and developing lesser known talent because he should know be worth more points. It's the same system just a different currency.

the article praises Panthers for signing TPJ on the cheap for end of last season. Then criticises us for doing the same with lodge, who was playing club rugby.

says the league is nonsense because papynhauzen is valued 2/3rds of Brooks. Thats great management by Storm and piss poor from the Tigers. his logic makes no sense and he should be criticising the tigers not the storm. Teams over pay for players that perform badly due to the systems of the club, then have a whinge through wet wipes like this fool.

TPJ is paid near 900k and is being dropped to reserve grade. Meanwhile we pay Tedesco that and hes one of the best in the league. maybe clubs should sort their shit out and stop blaming well run clubs for their failures.

this guy a buffoon of the highest order.

Malcolm writes well about cricket, and does have a nice style. The problem is being Victorian he knows nothing about Rugby League, but at Origin time and Semi Finals time, with his employers the Nine Network owning the paper now, he has to try and write about the NRL. The failings of the salary cap is the theme he usually rolls out, lacking the actual understanding of the game to offer anything approaching analysis of any actual play.

This article about Roosters "salary cap sombreros", inane comparisons with T20 Cricket drafts, and a complete ignorance when it comes to young player development (ie Joey Manu) is pretty poor. That's what lefties do though - criticize and talk down success. Even when they don't know what they're talking about, as Malcolm so obviously doesn't here.

If a points system it would based on a few that currently exist to allocate a points value to individual players

Something like the following would be possible in the NRL for an example in allocating points values to individual players

Played International Footy - X points
Played State of Origin- X Points
Other Rep Matches - X Points
                              0 to 50 NRL games - X Points
                              51-100 NRL games - X Points
                              101-150 NRL games - X Points
                              151-200 NRL games - X Points
201 games plus - possible free agency - No points allocated to these players

The points system will never happen. Don't know why it is repeatedly brought up. Same goes for the draft. If they really wanted to even up the comp then piss off some teams. Nowhere near enough talent to spread across 17 teams to make it even. Again that will never happen.

They should just continue changing the rules.
