No doubt, at the same age though no one rated Cronk at all. It wasn't until the emergence of the cap rorting Storm that Cronk really started to come along as a player and even then it took him a while to become the player he is today.
Halfback is by far the hardest position to play, even the great Joey Johns didn't settle into the position for some years.
Pearce is the fourth youngest halfback in the competition, the only one younger than him that has any organisational duties and role of being a dominant playmaker is Reynolds from Souths. The other two (Johnson & Thompson) are there to be creative and do next to no organising at all.
I'm not going to deny Pearce is over payed but so is JWH, Tasi, Cordner, Moga, RTS etc etc. Doesn't mean they are shit players.
And whatever joy we'll get from the 2-3 years of Cronk at the top of his game we'll pay for later when he retires. Pearce is more than an adequate club halfback and I reckon he'll turn into a great one down the track.
Also puts into perspective just how amazing DCE's achievements were last year and this, he's some player.
NRL officials are formally investigating Gold Coast’s dealings with Cooper Cronk, calling on all other clubs involved in negotiations to divulge how much they’ve offered the Melbourne halfback.
Today’s Rugby League Week reveals the League have intervened amid concerns the Titans could be declared insolvent next month. South Sydney, the Storm and St George Illawarra have been written to by salary cap auditor Ian Schubert and asked about their dealings with Cronk.
