  • Roosters seethe over Kaufusi tackle - Sydney Morning Herald

Came across this article on the SMH today regarding a hip drop tackle made by Kaufusi on SST that went unnoticed by the MRC (probably because the tackle luckily didn't cause an injury!). The article shows the clip of the tackle so I'll leave the link below.

I think they call that the anchor /base tackle where the defender uses the ground as a base to pull the ball carrier to the ground.

I would say what saved the Storm player was the minimal if any contact with the legs of SST as that is what they look at in defining a hip drop tackle - i.e trapping the lower limbs of the ball carrier in dangerous position with weight and force

The following link explains the key indicators of a hip drop tackle the MRC look for as explained by Graham Annesley.

      https://www.nrl.com/news/2022/05/02/...p-drop-tackle/

The simple thing would be is ban the third man in for these catch and hold tackles and the ref calls held and play the ball or coaches and consultants come up with better tackling techniques

Buzz: NRL must take blame for out-of-control Nelson

Anyone have access to the above article in this mornings Tele? Good to see that the Chookpen isn't the only place where these things are being noticed.

Who knows, one day the NRL and the match review might open their eyes and both prosecute and protect players equally.

There is a reason why Melbourne Storm forward Nelson Asofa-Solomona is the worst cheap shot merchant in rugby league – because the NRL judiciary system is so lenient and soft.

And former players are warning that the NRL is facing “litigation on a grand scale’’ if it does not do more to crack down on foul play that endangers players.

Asofa-Solomona has been found guilty of 10 acts of foul play over the last three years yet he has been suspended for only four games.

You go through his charges – dangerous contact to head and neck (twice).

            Five careless high tackles.

Contrary conduct (twice) and then the dangerous contact (elbow to the head) on Joseph Suaalii on Friday night.

Compilation of Nelson Asofa-Solomona shots versus the Roosters.
These are just the ones he has been charged on.

What about the disgraceful shot on Warriors hooker Wayde Egan earlier this year that knocked two of his teeth out? No action from the match review committee.

What about the knees to the head of Joey Manu at AAMI Park on Friday night. As clear as daylight. No action from the match review committee.

Back in the old days repeat offenders were heavily punished.

If a player ever walked into the old Phillip Street offices of the NSWRL to front judiciary chairman Jim Comans with a rap sheet like Asofa-Solomona, he’d be facing multiple weeks or months on the sideline. None of these pathetic fines.

Martin Lang, the old Sharks, Panthers and Maroons Origin forward, was one of the toughest and most fearless forwards to play the game.

He is now a neuroscience expert researching contact-sport brain injuries.

Lang called Asofa-Solomona’s elbow on Suaalii “dreadful” and posted a clip of the incident on social media that has already been viewed more than 100,000 times.

He warned the NRL to take action now to avoid a disaster in years to come.

“Approximately 90 per cent of the concussive episodes I sustained throughout my career were as a result of foul play,” Lang said.
            Nelson Asofa-Solomona’s rap sheet.
“The penalties handed down for foul play through my career were insufficient.

“It cannot continue or the NRL risks litigation on a grand scale.”

There were some interesting opinions as social media went into meltdown over the weekend around a number of grubby Melbourne Storm incidents on Friday night.

Somehow Cameron Munster got away with an elbow on Sam Walker with a concerning act letter.

Everyone loved the game on Friday night. It was like a fourth Origin game. The most brutal contest you will ever see.

Victor Radley’s dad Nigel summed up the mood well: “Games like that one will bring the crowds back– that’s what you want to see.”

However, there is no excuse for the grubbiness and the cheap shots.

Your columnist has always defended Melbourne Storm’s wrestling because every other side in the competition does it as well.

However, there is no defending players like Asofa-Solomona or his teammate and another repeat offender, Felise Kaufusi.

They need to be rubbed out of the game with long bans next time they step out of line.

Long suspensions are the most powerful foul-play deterrent and will drive behavioural change.

In today's lexicon saying that "Roosters seethe over Kaufasi tackle" means that "Roosters are whinging over Kaufasi tackle" they need to write a fairer headline because it's a fair question to ask why Collins was rightfully suspended but Kaufasi not even charged for a similar incident.

Look at Nelson Solomona's charge sheet there and remind yourself when Adrian Morley played he would get 3 to 5 weeks suspensions because of prior incidents, it's a bit of a joke that you can you have 3 careless high tackle charges in 1 season and 2 high tackle charges in 2 weeks and escape with a fine only every time, at what point does a player sit out a week or 2 for repeat penalties?

Finally people are starting to wake up.
1985: 1 try vs Parramatta, 1 try vs Manly, 1 try vs Wests, 2 tries vs Souffs

Because for far too long Melbourne have been and still are a "protected species". I don't know if it's because of the QRL influence over the years in that club or them being a one state/city club but whatever it is ... they have always been getting away with murder !

They're nothing but a bunch of salary cap rorting scumbags

Nelson’s leaping tackle technique is cause for concern too.. can quite easily cause a serious and ugly injury, the commentators were praising the technique when collins dropped it but gee it’s ugly

They used to be owned by News Crap when they first entered the league which is why they were able to get away with a lot until they pushed the salary cap cheating so far even the owners couldn't protect them.

Haven't read the article but Buzz was on radio absolutely giving it to NAS and the NRL for their inconsistent treatment of theirs and our cases. He didn't hold back.

I can't believe they tried to talk it up by saying "it's a union style tackling technique !" ... bullshit ... everyone knows Union players can't tackle for shit and they grab, hold, wrestle and all fall in ... that was more like a Gridiron style of tackle which you see in NFL highlights or in movies like "The Longest Yard".
