  • Souffs annoyed at Mitchell Booing

The booing of Latrell Mitchell will be much quieter next Sunday as the Sydney Roosters face the embarrassing scenario of being outnumbered by South Sydney fans at a home NRL final.

The Roosters won the right to host their fiercest rivals in a sudden-death elimination final at Allianz Stadium with Friday’s 26-16 victory.

Latrell Mitchell sent to sin bin

Roosters fullback Latrell Mitchell was binned for having his hand in the play the ball after repeated set-restarts.

Roosters supremo Nick Politis declared during the week “the Roosters are the only people that belong” at the new Moore Park venue, and the Rabbitohs have made it well known they want to make it their new base too, as tensions between the old foes bubbled away. But the Roosters are set to be significantly outnumbered when the sides clash again next weekend.

Roosters and Rabbitohs members will have the chance to buy tickets on Monday, 24 hours before they are made available to the public. Souths officials happily pointed out they had 31,000 members compared to the Roosters’ 18,000.

Having the bulk of fans inside the new ground will mean there will be less ridiculing of Mitchell, who was booed every time he carried the ball on Friday night. The jeering became a deafening crescendo when he was sin-binned in the second half.

Roosters fans have not forgiven Mitchell for breaking Joey Manu’s cheekbone last year, nor the manner in which he left the club following their 2019 grand final victory. There were similar scenes in round two when Mitchell was given a warm unwelcome at AAMI Park by Melbourne locals.

“How some Roosters fans decide to treat a two-time premiership winner is up to them,” Souths chief executive Blake Solly told The Sun-Herald. “But Souths fans and members absolutely love Latrell and cannot wait to get out there next Sunday. We want to turn the stadium into a sea of red and green and drown out the minority.”

Even Souths legend John Sutton could not help himself, taking a potshot at the Roosters and their smaller supporter base.

“Our fans actually show up to games; the Roosters needed a marching band when they ran on to the field the other night, just to create some noise,” Sutton said.

“As for booing Latrell, they were always going to come out and try to put him off his game. Typical Roosters. I didn’t expect anything less from their fans.”

While Mitchell enjoyed being the villain – and even posed with a few Roosters fans for photos after full-time – Souths officials thought there would have been a bit more respect shown, especially to a player who helped win the Bondi club two titles.

The Roosters did an excellent job early with Mitchell by pinning him deep inside his own half and having three and four defenders rush up on him with every carry. Coach Jason Demetriou, who watched the action from home while in COVID isolation – and quickly picked up on the booing through his laptop – said there was an easy way to avoid a second Mitchell ambush.

“It’s all pantomime – it’s what makes sport great,” he said. “We have to work harder in other areas to minimise their ability to [limit Mitchell]. That’s the challenge and that’s finals footy.

“There will be times when teams get the ascendancy, and you need to bite down on your mouthguard and get through it. You can’t expect to play the top teams and not be put under any pressure.

“Their play-the-ball speeds were quick at the start of the game, and they were kicking from the front foot. We need to ride that out.

“They’re a very good side, they’re playing great footy and are confident, so we know what kind of challenge is coming.”

Souths forward Jai Arrow likened the booing and Allianz atmosphere to an Origin game.

“The booing of Latrell was all in good fun, he’s an ex-Rooster, and every time he got the ball they let him know,” Arrow said.

“I’m sure he enjoys that part of the game. We play the game for the fans. It had a bit of an Origin vibe. We just weren’t good enough.

“We need to win the physical battle next week. I thought they bashed us in the first half, they won the middle third and then eventually the game. It’s a credit to them because they were up for the occasion.

“The positive we can take out of it is the way we fought in the second half.

I was at the game and the 5th photo from the top says it all.
It was a sea of RWB and they were very, very, vocal - to say the least.
      Hardly a Souffs jumper anywhere.
That's why you heard the Booing of Latrell through the TV.
If you are hearing it on TV, let me tell you , it was 10 times louder at the ground.
Sutton's comments that you couldn't hear the crowd when the Roosters came on, is utter bullshit.
Its just to make the Souufs fans feel better, perpetuate myths to the general public about the Roosters not having a loyal fanbase.
Listen to Connor Watson's comments on the Rooster's website post game - he has never heard, or seen , anything like it.
Souffs are cocky for the semi Final because the Roosters have a significantly depleted team - if Easts were at full strength, we would blast them off the park, and they would be sh*tting themselves..
Anyway , I'll be at the game, and it will be interesting to see how vocal the Souffs fans are when our forwards get stuck into them again.
It should be an interesting contest.

We really do need a sticky called "Souths Complain About" and just dump all their whinging in there.

Another one whose left hand doesn't know what his right hand is doing. I actually know someone like this. They dish it out and treat people like garbage, get their little groupies together to try and gang up on others but if you dare stick up for the other party, they start whining "oh they are being vitriolic'. No mate, it's called having a backbone. Nothing more satisfying than seeing bullies get their comeuppance.

How did they expect the crowd to behave after what happened to Joey last year? He took great pride in boasting on Instagram also about dumping his Steggles gear in the charity drive collection too like I posted in Jack's thread. That's the worst part of that..showing the Steggles bit on top of the dumped clothing. A real slap to the company who has donated over $4.8 million to the Charity Nest now..worth a lot more than some of Mitchell's old cast offs..

Last Friday was just a warm up gig....a dress rehearsal..I've met John Sutton also at the NRL 2014 season launch as the club took 20 of us and our guests in a mini bus. The friend I took has known him since he was a child and she introduced me to him. She said he has never been polite to her simply because she grew up in Matraville and chose Easts over the rest of her Souths loving family. She's nearly 3 times his age also. Very chip on shoulder attitude.

            What an interesting thread.

Andy, will you be at the game on Sunday?

Hope you and your friends have a great night and the Roosters get the win!

Take everyone with you to support the boys. Take your best friends uncles butchers sons dentists mum. They could passively, aggressively attack and boo from the sidelines.

The more support for the RWB the better!

Should have been plenty of souffs fans booing the fat myth on his performance..... a total failure at pretending to be a fullback.

Oh Renty this is a very interesting thread. Unlike the passive aggressive who will boo at their computer screen at home, that is unless they don’t have another power cut. I will be there. Not really a boo boy but whenever it gets the ball I will be screaming hit him hit him. Quite a few don’t like sitting near me at a footy game as I’m very loud and I’ve heard on the grape vine some think it is scary.

Apart from the warm up bit The rest is a crock of shite. I’ve sat in a local pub and through a mutual friend had a beers and a punt with Reni Maitua and Sutton one off season whilst wearing a Roosters cap.

I just love the standard Roosters have 0 supporters line that the dumb invreds & their supporters constantly drag out. Funny that our average crowd numbers were higher than the Vermin. Just because you have a stupid bunny sticker on your car doesn’t mean you’re a supporter.
