  • 2010 Team

A bit early for this but might as well start it as we're signing new players and we can get a gauge of how the team might look next season.

    1. Anthony Minichiello
    2. Sam Perrett
    3. Mitch Aubusson
    4. Setaimata Sa
    5. Shaun Kenny-Dowall
    6. Todd Carney
    7. Mitchell Pearce
    8. Nate Myles
    9. Jake Friend
    10. Lopini Paea
    11. Willie Mason
    12. Anthony Cherrington
    13. Braith Anasta (c)

    14. Frank Paul-Nuusuala
    15. Daniel Conn
    16. Tom Symonds
    17. James Aubusson

The above team would be my Round One team for next year including the new signings we've made this year. I think it's a very-well balanced side with ball playing options in the halves and also at lock. The forward pack can be as explosive as any other pack in the competition on their day. The backline is probably the same as this season's at full-strength (barring Soliola) but it brings a welcome problem in not being able to fit young Ben Jones into a position unless he is a utility of the bench. The halves will be a very strong combination with Pearce and Carney, both very young and can form a lethal partnership in the coming years.

Players that I expect to get an opportunity due to injury, form or Origin committments at some stage next year, are (whether from Toyota Cup or Newtown):

    Ryan Williamson
    Stanley Waqa
    Jared Wearea-Hargreaves
    Luke Towers
    Martin Kennedy
    Liam Foran
    Ben Jones
    Fine Moeakiola
    Nick Kouparitsis
    Sisa Waqa
    Sandor Earl
    Olireti Samuelu
    Mose Masoe
    Boyd Cordner
    Sonny Tuigamala

Basically rounds out the rest of the fulltime squad for next year I'd say. Pretty good depth in our ranks next year, plenty of raw potential there and I'm confident of a relatively successful year.

I'm not sure if the Rooster-contracted Jets like Sonny Tuigamala, Liam Foran, Stanley Waqa, Tu'u Maori, Rohan Ahern, Matthew Hall, and the other U20 players who will be too old for NYC like Dylan Sharp, Sandor Earl, Martin Kennedy, Like Towers, Isaac Maliota, Mark Talanoa and Ray Tafokitau.

Exactly the team I would pick, except swap Conn and Cherrington. If Mason leaves, I'd put Jones at centre and Sa in the backrow.

I'd love to see Isaac Maliota retained. One badass prop!

I know that Luke Towers, Martin Kennedy and Sandor Earl will be too old for NYC but not sure on Mark Talanoa, Dylan Sharp and Ray Tafokitau. I'm guessing they'll be playing for the Jets next year.

I think Maliota, Samuelu and Moeakiola still have another year in NYC but don't take my word for that, if not I'm guessing they'll be joining the Jets next year with the others.

The only problem is I do not know who is still contracted for next year and who isn't? Can anybody shed some light on which of the young players are being retained and which are not?

For NYC, players that I know are young enough to play there next year:

      Boyd Cordner
      Grant Nelson
      JP Du Plessis
      Sam Brunton
      Cheyse Blair
      Jacob Miller
      Brad Murray
      Matthew Hands

1 major problem. I am not happy about our centres. They are defensive and slow. Sa and m. Aubo need to be replaced buy a superstar. Eg. Michael jennings. If we use sa and aubo nxt yr. I rekan good luck 2 us.

As we're in a rebuilding stage, I think it's best we develop our young players and guide them through to NRL level. If we buy a big-name centre, we might lose two or three of our young stars that we've been building over the last couple of years. But it all depends on which direction the club want to take and whether their patient enough to develop the talent already at the club. Across the board, next year will be a really, really young side and with our recent signings, I'm guessing the club is building for long-term success.

That team should just and I mean just win the foundation cup.

Unless Anasta gets pushed out of 5/8th by Carney there is no way he will give the spot up to Symonds. If anything Ben Jones will be next in line.
Symonds is doing fine in the backrow, he has the build for it.

I'm not sure if Symonds would be next in line for the five-eighth spot if Carney doesn't come along. I'd put Anasta back at 6 and Sa to 13. I'd also have Williamson in the 20's for the first couple of weeks so he can get a few games under his belt because he has rarely played this year and has been extremely unlucky with injuries and suspensions. After a few games and depending on form, I'd move him up, again depending on the form of Jones if he's at centre.

Good looking team though. Just goes to show no matter what team gets put on the park next year, they are more likely to be competitive than not.

IMO Anasta is a hinderence to Pearce at 5/8. He seems to intimidate Pearce. Sinse Anasta has been hurt Pearce has played much better and thats the reason I'd have Symonds at 5/8. As far as Carney is concerned the club has enough troubles without employing more.

I agree with murry. First things, first, we need to prioritize getting all our current players in their best positions. Minichiello at fullback, Perrett and SKD on the wings, Pearce at halfback, Paea and Myles in the frontrow with FPN rotating, Friend as hooker with Jorbs rotating, and Anasta at lock.

All the other players, like Symonds, Sa, Mitch Aubusson, Jones, Cherrington, Conn, need to be moulded around those key positions.
