  • Victor Radley v Cameron Murray

Two years ago Victor Radley and Cameron Murray were neck and neck as the best ball playing lock in the NRL.

Unfortunately, it’s daylight between him and Murray now. The last two seasons for Victor has been very disappointing.

I love Rads but what does be have to do to get back on par with Murray.

In my opinion he needs to decide what kind of player he wants to be. He either needs to be a hard hitting enforcer or a ball playing back rower. He’s struggling to keep up with both roles.

The introduction of Brandon Smith in 2023 will take the pressure of Rads for his enforcer role, allowing him to do more with the ball. We’ve all seen our go forward when his attack is on song.

I never want to see him pull back on his ‘inflictor’ role, but I do think he needs to model his game more on the way Murray is currently playing. It will add so much more value to the team.

BTW, I wouldn’t trade Victor for anyone, but he does need to change his game if he truely wants to get to the next level.

I don't agree with that. Rads can be both. His only problem is he is mentally immature. He needs to study a psychopath like Cameron Smith. Learn to become emotionally detached and calculated.

It’s because of his immaturity that he can’t take on both roles. Once he has the red mist he loses sight of the ball playing part of his game

In Rads own words Murray has always been better than him since they were 6 years of age. I've been saying for years that Murray is Souths most important player.
He has the quickest play the ball in the game and a great defender and is virtually their half-back.
He is one souths player I can't dislike, Latrell and Cody are great players but are complete tossers this bloke isnt.
I love Rads but he is behind Murray, Yeo and Carrigan as a lock.

At the moment Rads resembles Reg Reagan in a Roosters jumper. Unfortunately he is often the victim of his own passion and loyalty to team mates and its hard to be completely critical of such traits, but he does need to find the balance quickly.

He has also been hobbled by injury and suspension the past couple of seasons. On the suspension side of things he has been dealt with unfairly. Yes he has committed infringements but he has received harsher penalties than like offences committed by other players.

I still think he can be one of our greats and I'm backing him. Hopefully he reassesses and resets during the off season. If he does I think he can close the gap on Murray and Yeo pretty quickly.

BTW, not sure if its been discussed on here but the sit down with Jake Duke - Victor Radley, Whatever It Takes on Kayo and Fox is worth a look.

Can’t compare Rads to Murray. Murray is hardly injured, never suspended and a real leader on and off the field. But….. Rads has 2 premierships.

They’re different players… Murray is a quicker more skilful runner… Radley is a tougher harder hitting enforcer

Radley is fine… this whole idea that your lock has to be some brilliant playmaker is well over rated

The benchmark… Yeo… is a very solid and very reliable second receiver but he’s hardly Magic Johnson on the fast break

At this moment in time, I would take Murray over Radley. But obviously things can change.

If Radley plays well Rd1 he will be better than Murray again, and if he plays average Rd2 he will be worse again etc.

We’re a fickle a bunch, you aren’t really as good as your last game

Let's be realistic, Murray has progressed in the last couple of years while parts of Radleys game have struggled.

Radleys attacking game is so underrated-even by himself. The way he straightens the attack and ball plays through the centre is a big part of the teams success. He doesn't need to be a kamikaze defender- it puts him off his attacking game and it's going to shorten his career with the head knocks.

The role of an enforcer I’m modern rugby league is limited. They are not allowed to protect players anymore and with amount of cameras they can’t deal out ‘medicine’ to the opposition.

Coming in as the third man serves no purpose apart from getting you sent to the bin for 10 and who benefits from that. If you rough someone up in the play the ball and they lay down it ultimately ends up as a penalty against you.

The game is morphing away from a tough game to a game of skill and speed and intimidation doesn’t work if the refs already have you on their ‘cheat sheet’.

Rads will do more good by helping set up scoring opportunities than he will running in and grabbing players around the neck.

Love Rads but it’s time for him to adapt to the way NRL is played today.

I don't watch all the games but I watched Murray last night, and he's obviously very, very good. Rads does need to mature and as someone else mentioned, his best games are the attack based ones where he forgets about the big shots and is just a great defender but runs those beatifuil straight lines with he ball. If you asked who has more upside - well it's clearly Rads. I wouldn't swap him for anyone, let alone Murray.

The chooks need a dominant leader like cronk to help some of our wayward stars get back on track
