  • 2023 Season

All the players playing in the RLWC will no doubt return to pre-season training mid to late January.2023

With a 17 team comp it will be interesting what the draw will look like

Apparently the 2023 season is scheduled to commence on Thursday Match 2nd 2023

27 rounds ( 24 games) and Each team will have 3 byes

SOO to be played on 3 consecutive Wednesday nights

Players union are wanting it mandatory that SOO players are stood down from Club Footy the weekend rounds following SOO..Meaning these players will be unavailable for up to 4 rounds - depending if their teams play on those weekends

With the odd number of teams each week a team will have a bye- The timing of the byes will be interesting as mentioned above as during SOO there will be teams that will receive 1 bye and others 2 byes during that period.

During the SOO period there will be 3 rounds of 4 games each weekend - The Friday 6 pm game moved to Sunday during that period.

Who has the Bye last round too as not sure if teams will receive 2 points for each bye or for only 1 bye.

The all team bye Rep round weekend has been scrapped

The proposed draw has been sent to all clubs for comment with the confirmed draw coming out sometime in November 2022.

The sooner they have 18 teams the better and conferences as well to ensure a fair draw.

It doesn't have to be a Sydney / Non Sydney team conference as you could have 2 conferences as follows- adding Perth as the 18th team- play teams in your conference twice and other conference Once - either Superbowl GF or cross over conference finals series

    Conference A
    • Roosters
    • Souths
    • Sharks
    • Dragons
    • Warriors
    • Knights
    • Sea Eagles
    • Raiders
    • Storm

    Conference B
    • Cowboys
    • Broncos
    • Titans
    • Dolphins
    • Perth
    • Eels
    • Panthers
    • Bulldogs
    • Wests Tigers

Thanks King for the update. I knew about the extra early start and the release of the draw in November but not so much the other details you've provided. Going to be a long season..but looking forward to seeing what Redcliffe can do.

The AFL have 18 teams, and they don’t play in a conference system. I don’t see a need for it, in your example, you have 4 Sydney teams that will be travelling interstate every few weeks, where the other conference only travels out of NSW twice.

To some people the draw will never be fair unless you play each other twice, for me, you play the cards your dealt, we couldn’t even beat the so called “easy” teams when we played them early on.

Stand alone origins are the only thing I would want to help make it fairer for teams.

Standalone SOO played on the same weekend as Pacific Tests would be good. They could easily get 5 games in. NRL won't do it for 2 reasons though. 1. Makes the season 3 weeks longer (3 more games for all players involved is tough on the body). 2. More importantly c9 love the Wednesday night SOO. It is a cash cow for them.

I understand the want to make it a more fair draw in the sense everyone plays eachother twice. That is the only way to determine it fairly. However we don't have a first past the post system and there is little to no emphasis about claiming minor premierships, the draw will never be 100% perfect.

I completely agree that an 18th team is a must ASAP. Bye rounds are not fun. Conferences are a unique idea but I still think would struggle to get off the ground in this country. 18 teams is still small enough to keep the draw as is and have everyone play eachother. I won't be shocked if NRL make it Top 10 to increase interest coz I think you'll see some discrepancies in quality (more than we already do) when the 18th team finally comes in.

Isn’t it possible to leave the crap games until after the season ends? Rugby League to me is about Easts nothing else so I couldn’t care less about other money making franchises. With enough injuries already, having SOO only increases the risk. Or increase the salary cap so we can compensate for missing players during origin.
