  • The magical 700k salary cap rise

It wont impact clubs like people think it's going to.

Everyone has known for years now that the new TV deal for 2013 would see a big rise in the cap, this means player managers have had clauses written into their player's contracts that their salary will rise when the salary cap rises. There is no magical extra 700k that every club gets to spend all of a sudden...

If SBW signs and it seems to be getting to the point of not if but when it will cost us more than people on here seem to realise.

    Youngsters off contract in the next 18 months;

    Boyd Cordner
    Lama Tasi
    Jared Warea Hargreaves
    Mitchell Aubusson
    Mitchell Pearce
    Aiden Guerra
    Joseph Leilua
    Brad Takarangi

We've got no players heading to retirement in the near future with Anasta and Mini (most likely) moving on soon so I don't know where people think we'll pull the money from in the cap to re-sign them if we sign SBW. I don't know where people think we'll be able to pull money from in the cap to keep our players who come up from the NYC as their value sky rockets.

All I know is that a lot of the people who want SBW to sign will be the same people who criticise the club when we lose someone like JWH, Tasi or a young Kane Evans.

I'll sit through a poor season like this and happily support and defend the club, so long as it stays true to its policy or even a philosophy if you will of developing young kids from within the club. I really hope they turn down the temptation of a quick fix in SBW.

do we really need overpaid money bill? if we were so desperate for an attacking option, why then did we release Tod Carney WHO was on nowhere near that money?

When you have a policy of developing youth you are aware, and have to accept, that you are not going to be able to keep all the players you bring through. Hopefully, you get to hang on to the ones you want to hang onto, but inevitably some club is going to pay overs to lure a certain player away (example, Shillo)

Now as far as I'm concerned the most important thing is winning footy games, but for the people running the club, it's not the only thing they have to worry about.

The thing a lot of people are forgetting about Sonny is what he'll bring to the club off the field. Crowds, membership, sponsorship, exposure, etc.

Rooster 6, you hit the nail on the head..very well put. People need to understand the implications of SBW coming on board. Luckily, it's now looking shaky

Todd Carney, set up tries and kicked the winning field goal yesterday.

It's tough to think that we will most likely lose at least 2 from that list, and that's without signing SBW. This is why I don't want him at the club. Not because of the circus he'll bring, not because he's no good, but because we're building towards something at the club and whether or not anything comes of it, I'd at least like to know one way or another.

Brad Takarangi is our new SBW.

I wanted SBW to being with but not anymore these kids are the way forward we might have a bad year or two but will be rewarded if we keep the group together with many good seasons. Which I believe will go on to win the comp in 2014 if we do the right thing and spend our money on better option then SBW we have a solid backrow at the moment that not our weekness what I believe we need is a fast winger and fullback.

Mitchell Aubusson is another who will get the 200k expemption from the salary cap for 8 years service that I think Easts for life was mentioning earlier today To my knowledge he has been here since at least 2006 This means we possibly have 5 players after 2013our books now that will be eligible

They are Mini Perett Pearce FPN and Maubbs thats Thinking about it are we able to claim it for all those players if they stayed or is it a certain number ? If each and every player is eligible thats 1 million in expemtions to the cap Suddnely this youth policy makes even mores ense if they can work their way through to 1st garde and stay at the club long term Especially if you can cliam for every player

Andrew, as I posted in another thread...

it is not a $200K concession per player, it is a $200K concession total for players having a minimum 8 years NRL experience. Lower grade experience does not count.. You can have 17 players with 8 years NRL experience and it will still be a $200K max. total exemption.

                  http://www.nrl.com/nrlhq/referencece...4/default.aspx

2003 Long Serving Player Allowance introduced to encourage Clubs to retain players who have served a continuous period of 10 years in first grade. This $100,000 allowance lifted the effective cap to $3.55m.

2006 A heads of agreement for a four-year Collective Bargaining Agreement was signed in June for seasons 2007-10. The agreement provided for:

                  A $3.9m salary cap in 2007 – up from $3.366million
                  Minimum wages of $55,000 (1-17) and $50,000 (18-25) – up from $37,500
Origin payments increasing to $12,500 per game
Increases in Third Party Sponsorship Agreements to $150,000
Reduction in qualifying period for veteran players from 10 to 8 years
$100,000 for the RLPA retirement fund and towards RLPA contributions.

                  2010

The 2006-10 collective bargaining agreement is extended for 12 months with the following increases:

                  A lift in the salary Cap of $200,000 to $4.3m ($100,000 Increase to the base, $100,000 increase to veteran player allowance);
                  ...

Thank you I didnt see your explanation which is different to that of the other poster who posted something about these concessions which were very different to what you have said and shown me

As I began to think about it the harder it came to believe as I could see with the previous info we could have had posibly up to 1million in exemptions So thanks for the clarification it is greatly appreciated from my end

forgive me if i'm unaware, but is this necessarily true? It seemed to me as though quite a few nrl players had signed contracts ending just before the new TV contract would be out (ie. between now and 2013); as to allow higher-valued contract renegotiations with the commencement of the new tv deal.

Surely this means that not all NRL players have clauses stipulating automatic salary rises with the TV contract and may vary from player to player

Just on this, there's a lot of public and media support for dispensations in the cap for one club and long serving players. All it would need is for one club to come out and a few others to follow to get a real discussion going on about it.

Rather than raising the cap from 5m to 6-7m in 2014 as expected introducing dispensations is a definite option. Gallop has never been opposed to it and the IC are still trying to win over everyone so if there's enough support it'll happen.

Couldn't be better timed for our club either.
