  • Dragons considered signing Ciraldo, chose Griffin instead - SMH

Just some interesting non-Roosters news for a change.

    I was flawed reading this.

'And there’s Illawarra, which provides 4000 of the club’s 5500 juniors and remains one of the biggest nurseries in the country.

That nursery is what prompted Ciraldo to make overtures to sign there weeks before he did the deal at the Bulldogs. Some directors were keen but, ultimately, it backed Griffin'.

Great article here by Andrew Webster:

No different to Wests Tigers/Manly and even the Bulldogs with too many factions/self interest/white anting etc all undermining their clubs.

As a product if the Gong I still don't really accept the merger.

In my mind Cronulla and St George are same-same. Whereas the Gong is a massive area that's home to solid players like the Morris brothers (plus dad), Andrew Walker, Craig Fitzgibbon, Luke Patten...etc.

IMO they shoulda merged the two struggling clubs (St George + Cronulla) and beefed up the Gong. I'm sure there's some BHP / Blue Scope exec who loves footy and can stump up the cash.

Agree completely. Playing against Illawarra in junior rep footy, those red jerseys would spark fear into us. You always knew they’d be gun players. It’s a shame they lost their identity in the merger

They should have created a new inner city team out of Souths , Balmain and Newtown and left Wests as a standalone club - Renamed them the Macarthur Magpies as the Junior numbers in that area will surpass even Penrith's in the not too distant future

To be fair Ciraldo is untried.
He is meant to be the next boy wonder but so was Trent Barrett, how well did that work out for Manly and Canterbury.
Maybe St George got a bit gun shy after seeing how that panned out.

If something went terribly wrong here and Robbo wasn’t to continue for some reason I wouldn’t want him taking over.
