Wakefield Trinity lead chase for Sydney Roosters powerhouse prop

Wakefield Trinity are drawing closer to securing a prop forward as they work on a deal for Sydney Rooster prop Renouf Atoni. Rugby League Live understands Mark Applegarth has set his sights on the 27-year-old after he emerged on their radar despite being under contract with the NRL powerhouse club.

Atoni, who was linked with a move to Wigan Warriors last year, has been made available after not playing in the NRL this season following his move to the Roosters. Before that, he had played for Canterbury, where he was a regular with the Bulldogs before his move to Sydney.

Atoni, who comes in at 6ft 2 and 110 kilos, is precisely the sort of powerhouse addition Wakefield have been searching for throughout the off-season. Their search has seen them scour the World Cup but now, it appears they might have landed on a player who is still contracted.

As it stands, Wakefield would have to ensure they can secure a visa before signing off a deal but it's believed that they are quite far down the track when it comes to tying up their latest addition for the new season. They have prioritised a middle to help replace the outgoing David Fifita and Tinirau Arona.

Before his move to the Roosters, reports in Australia linked Atoni with a big-money move to the Warriors. He has made 43 appearances down under during his career. Now, a move to Super League appears to be on the horizon.

Wakefield have made a number of additions to their squad but it has been the pack where they face put most of their focus. They have seen a number of targets head elsewhere, such as Sam Lisone and Elijah Taylor. They still have quota spots in the bank to enhance their squad before the season starts.

He has been used in various roles during his NRL career, sometimes starting and making big minutes while at other times coming off the bench to make an impact. In 2022 he spent his year playing in the NSW Cup for the Bears, scoring five tries in 14 appearances, starting all but one game at loose forward.

Having watched Atoni play for the bears a couple of times, "powerhouse" is not a description that springs to mind.
          "shithouse" would be more appropriate.

I think the author justs like saying 'powerhouse'.

Powerhouse club losing a powerhouse player.

I'll bet he thinks all babies are 'breathtaking' too.

What a loss he would be. Best debut season since that halfwit hooker that was more interested in being a fake bikie.

Surely this frees up a bit more cash to secure Lodge? or Robbo new it was coming, signed Lodge to a Train/Trial and when its official and hes gone, Lodge is signed/announced.

Why does the article refer to him as a Sydney Roosters player when he never played for The Roosters. And Powerhouse!? Really?

And this just adds more weight to the fact that England will never win a League World Cup again in any of our lifetimes, or be classed as a legit competition. The blokes a fair dinkum spud who was bog average in NSW Cup. He’s a bush level forward at best yet a pathetic Pom team will actually pay him to take a spot from a homegrown kid.

Anyone know how much coin Atoni was on? Put it in the Sign Matt Lodge Fund now. I got used to his fearless barging runs and super quick play the balls- get it done!!!
