  • Teddy makes the first move

Well according to Fox our FB dilemma might be starting sooner then we think?

Apparently teddy has approached us for a contract extension and wants to secure his long term future. He has 2 years left on his current deal.

What do we do now? Tell him to hold off and see how JS or Manu further develop??

The fullback drama is just a media beat-up.
I've never heard Suaalii or Manu put a gun to our heads over the position they play, it's all hearsay.
Even if they did, we have the best fullback in the game at the moment.

Manu seems happy at our club, and Suaalii has given himself the option of leaving any year he wants. Let the cards fall as they may.

Manu is developed. He is a keeper, and next in line for the No.1 throne

Teddy is captain and has huge influence over our results on field. Our biggest threat in attack, and the best fullback playing the game. Keep of course.

Suallii has buckloads of talent and has the potential to be anything. However, the ceiling is unknown and the other 2 are proven at the highest possible level.

Between the 3, i'd be most reluctant to release Manu or Teddy. My strategy would be release Toups to free up Sualli money. And if Sualli wants to play fullback, reluctantly but sadly let him walk at take 1.3 mill to play fullback at the Dragqueens or somewhere.

        "FB dilemma"... lol

Perhaps the greatest fullback of the modern era and potential future Immortal who still has 4-5 great years of footy left in him wants a contract extension.

Yeah what a pickle of a situation for the club.

Planning ahead as always. You’d be quite naive not to right?

Hmm that says it for me…

Well I mean, does Joseph really have to say anything? His actions speak for themselves I figured.

Well yeah, I appreciate your view on the topic and agree - let’s see how it all pans out.

Of course we plan ahead but there's no fullback dilemma.

Teddy is the greatest and you re-sign him for a couple more years asap if given the opportunity.

Sure, but if Sualli has the following offers on the table later next year.

                Roosters, play centre: $800,000
Another NRL club, play fullback: $1,100,000
                Rugby: $1,5000,000+

...then it's quite likely he wouldn't pick us.

I'd be sad to see him leave if that is what happens, but likewise I wouldn't crucify him if he is able to get a 300k+ a year pay rise. The other issue is that the earlier in his career he plays at fullback, the better at the position he'll be in the long run. Over a 10 year career for example, the difference in pay for positions could equate to a loss of 3 million bucks over that time span if he were to remain in the centres.

Fox picked this story up from Danny Weidler in the Herald. Very interesting about how close Suaalii is to Uncle Nick:

"The Roosters’ wonderful fullback dilemma was first raised in this column a few weeks back, and it’s about to get a whole lot more interesting after a bold move by the game’s top No.1 James Tedesco.

Fresh off a stellar World Cup-winning display for Australia in the final, Tedesco’s management team is moving to extend the contract of the Roosters, Blues and Kangaroos skipper. It’s a stunning move, given Tedesco has two years to run on his existing deal.

Any club would jump at the opportunity to lock up a player of his enormous ability for life. Tedesco has, after all, won the past five player of the year awards at the Roosters.

However, the situation at the club is unique, given they provided the No.1s for three nations at the World Cup: Tedesco with Australia, Joey Manu for New Zealand and Joseph Suaalii with Samoa.

The Roosters can probably accommodate Manu and Tedesco in the same team, as Manu could be a great No.6 and will take Luke Keary’s job when he retires.

Which brings us to the best teenager in the game, Suaalii. As his former adviser Steve Nasteski told this column in September, Suaalii is a long-term fullback and his view was that Teddy needs to go or the Roosters risk losing Suaalii. Nasteski was ridiculed at the time but, privately, the Roosters know they are in a great, but difficult, position.

European rugby will be hard for Suaalii to ignore. As will Rugby Australia. As will rival NRL clubs. Suaalii will forego millions if he stays in league for the long haul, which is why the move to extend Tedesco’s deal is so interesting.

Suaalii has only recently turned 19 and will continue improving with age. He is also close to the Roosters’ hierarchy. He made the effort to travel to watch Greece play France at the World Cup, sitting beside Roosters chairman Nick Politis. Politis was truly moved by the gesture.

And sh*t like that is why it will be super hard to see him go if he does.. sky is the limit for him potentially but when you hear acts like this.. very difficult position.

Sign Teddy for as long as he wants. He won't play a day longer than he is able to should he succumb to injury or old age. If Suallii wants to go to the highest bidder, let him go. If he doesn't, and decides to stay with us, that will improve his chances of being an all time great of the game. And if he wants to stay, he'll play where he's needed. Joey Manu will stay until he takes a move home big cash retirement deal from the Warriors. In the interim he'll get opportunities to pay at 6 and 1 through injury and rep duty from Keary and Tedesco.
                        .
How the goon league "sportswriters" we have are somehow allowed to get away with passing this boring made up gossip nonsense off as their contribution to the media companies who employ them, is laughable. And these papers wonder why they're all going down the gurgler?

I don't follow US sports but I read this article a few years back about the Chicago Cubs, who had won their first world series in a gazillion years. I've tried so hard since to find it online, with no success. It was beautiful article - the writer wrote about everyone from the truck driver dropping the papers off with the headline that they'd won the morning after and locals waiting in the dark to get the paper, the people in the pubs during each game, and heaps more. It was amazingly written and made you cry.

All we have are these gossip mongering fools who can hardly string a sentence together. Except Andrew Webster of course, who is a fantastic writer.

                            My 2 bobs worth.
Suaalii is not a FB in my eyes, he’s like Latrell he’s to big & not nimble enough like Teddy & to a lesser degree Manu.
I think Suaalii needs to play centre & play a power game be a X factor strike centre.
In regards to Teddy I don’t think the Chooks should rush to re-sign him at this stage, he’s got another 2 year contract & I think after that his best footy is behind him but if he’s still playing at a 9 out 10 level then the Chooks should just sign him on a year to year basis. The Chooks have looked after him & will continue to look after him. I can see him finishing his career at the Catalans.
On Manu I think his best position is also centre but he would also be a very good replacement for Teddy.
Who will take over from Keary Im not sure so it’s a wait & see for me, Burton would be who I would go after.
Does anyone know if Burtons contract at the dogs finishes when Kearys contract finishes at the Chooks?

Extend Teddy and Manu, they’re established performers. If anyone to leave I think it’ll be Keary , nkt because of the so called concussion issues, rather because he’s a smart man with a business degree and retiring whilst still healthy and with the backing of the Roosters brain trust he will venture into business administration paving the way for Manu to 5/5 in 2024 and Suallii ( if he divides to stay) to centre.
