  • The NRL won't let Laurie Daley work as a coaching consultant

because he has a gig on the TAB owned Big Sports Breakfast radio program. As if in some way this means he could concoct some sort of betting rort?

Non Rooster related yes, but have you ever heard anything more absurd?

Was it for Manly? They were talking about that a little while ago, but didn’t know it was because of a conflict he couldn’t.

he does the morning gig, a 5min appearance on the Matty johns show, loves his racing. I think Loz lives a pretty good life on the northern beaches, and probably doesn’t need the hassles of consulting, unless he wants to use it as a stepping stone into coaching again.

Was he coaching NSW when he was on the show?

But it’s ok for V’landys to run NSW Racing and the NRL.

Seems odd given that NRL clubs and the NRL itself can still take money from gambling organisations.

If you're wanting to shut down the conflict of interest perception then I understand that but you can't just pick and choose when and where you want to start applying it.

There is so much gambling money in Rugby League this seems like a really odd place to be drawing the line in the sand.

            See Below

“The NRL Code of Conduct prohibits all players, club officials, match officials and administrators from being sponsored, employed, contracted, engaged or otherwise commercially involved in any way with a gambling operator.

Per the Herald, this isn't the first time that Daley has had his hopes of an NRL return blocked. The Michael Magurie-led Wests Tigers attempted to bring him into their ranks in 2019, before it was determined that his role on Sky Sports Radio's Big Sports Breakfast created a potential conflict of interest given that he regularly gave NRL tips during segments.

What's odd is that anyone would want Daley anywhere near their coaching ranks. The NRL are doing Wests or whoever it is a favour

Did I miss something... has Daley killed kittens or something? Thought he was a nice guy and did a solid job with NSW.

Sounds more like they don't like him working for alternative brands.

Makes perfect sense to me. He works for a gambling company and he could be sharing inside knowledge with that employer. I know he probably wouldn't, but can you imagine the scandal if the TAB opened Manly up at $1.80 against say Wests when every other company had them at a $1.30 and all the punters jumped in to it, only to find that Turbo and DCE had both been ruled out after previously being named in the team?

                    LOL agreed.
I just wish he'd stop turning up on telly pushing his gambling.
The sooner the NRL stops betting companies being involved in the sport the better.

Any other coach, or assistant coach, or player manager, or player, or player's wife, or players friend, could be sharing information with a betting company, they just don't happen to work at one. And they could be rewarded in other ways than getting a wage. The betting company would be placing their entire license at risk, what, in the hope of getting a small win on one game? Laurie Daley would be placing his entire legacy in the game at risk, what, for a few grand? Absolute nonsense and would never happen. And even if did, which it might once every millennium, they'd be caught. The odds scenario you describe can't happen. Punters could back one team at one bookie (Manly at $1.80) and their opponent at $3.10 - the other side of the $1.30 the other bookies had Manly at. The TAB who has Manly at $1.80 wouldn't lay a bet on their opponent, and the bookies who had Manly at $1.30 wouldn't lay a bet on Manly.

To cut a bloke out of a job because of the 1 in 100,000 chance he's going to try to be a criminal and concoct a betting advantage for himself is farking moronic.

Couldn,t agree more Eddie. A true blight on the game and the fact that the punter broker is running the NRL is disgraceful.
It has ruined so many lives. And, yes people can choose not too but if you believe that that is the case then you dont understand addiction.

Neither are directly associated with gambling. Disgraceful how gambling has been promoted in Oz. We are far and away the most prolific wasters of our own and taxpayers money. It is a curse on families that have to endure its frequent consequences.
