  • Corey Allan signs with Roosters

This will end up like Atoni.....

Canterbury are continuing their roster overhaul, clearing more space from their top-30 squad with a former Origin star switching clubs.

Canterbury continue to clear the decks to ease their roster logjam, releasing former State of Origin winger Corey Allan.

Allan has signed a one-year deal with the Sydney Roosters in a bid to get his stalled NRL career back on track.

Allan is the latest Bulldog to exit the kennel while still under contract, following the recent departure of centre Aaron Schoupp to the Gold Coast, captain Josh Jackson’s early retirement.

The 24-year-old shot to fame during his time at South Sydney, where he earned an Origin call-up for Queensland.

That was the catalyst for him signing a big-money three-year deal with the Bulldogs.

But his two-year stay at Belmore didn’t turn out as hope, with his form reflecting the club’s struggles.

“Corey Allan has been released from the final year of his contract with the Canterbury-Bankstown Bulldogs, effective immediately,” the club said in a statement on Thursday morning.

“We thank Corey for his two years of service to the Bulldogs and wish him all the best for the future.”

While Allan only managed 21 NRL games for Canterbury, his previous form at the Rabbitohs showed glimpses of the talent he can be.

He came into the Souths team in 2019 and, the following season, filled in for Rabbitohs superstar Latrell Mitchell at fullback and ultimately played in Queensland’s historic State of Origin win under Wayne Bennett.

The Roosters obviously see Allan as someone who can play anywhere in the outside backs, and with Joseph Suaalii’s potential move to the centres, he could find himself in a battle for a wing spot opposite Daniel Tupou.

I’m assuming Canterbury will be footing a large portion of his contract. Good depth signing. Maybe Robbo can get him firing again
        Red, White and Bluesters!!!

Reportedly on 500k at the Dogs so one assumes they would be paying at least 50% of this - hopefully - NSW Cup Signing and NRL squad depth.

So when Lodge signs that will be 28 of the 30 NRL Roster spots filled.

Noting that 3 of the 28 in Billy Smith / Sitili Tupouniua / Robert Toia will be late season returns from their respective ACL injuries - July/August if 12 month rehabs which they tend to favour.

So 25 at least to start the season in 2023

Good pick up, covers centre and wing. Obviously fullback as well but he's in a long line there...

Improvement on Keighran & Naiqama IMO.

He reminds me of teddy, just with a tenth of the talent, maybe it’s the way he runs, again with a tenth of the speed tho lol

Hard to believe this guy played (well) in origin. Hopefully Robbo can fire him up again. Not great signs that he couldn’t even get in that Dogs team.

Hoping a change of environment and being at a decent club for the first time ever for both Allan and Paulo will bring the best out of them. As both are Souths rejects it would be even better to see them succeed. Both good depth signings who could put pressure on Momo.

Now we just need another experienced prop.

The Dogs are a mess. I wouldn't read too much into that.

SST couldn't get a start in the 1st grade side at the Warriors before he joined us. Moa couldn't get an NRL club to sign him before he joined us.

It's not a determining factor for success (or lack of) at the Roosters.

Couldn’t have put it better. Both solid back up options, have the experience, and dare I say, on their day, good players. Will put the heat on Momo like you said, maybe his performances will lift. Much prefer those two names for depth signings than Gildart and Naiqama (what a nightmare).

Can someone enlighten me as to Sitili’s potential return date? NRL put up an article talking about who will get the other second row spot come the opening of the season, Butch or Sitili…but to my knowledge, it was an ACL, and that’s pretty much a full year turn around? It seems either they have no idea, or we’re not getting the full story and he is back sooner than expected.

Props are sorted - JWH/Collins/Lodge with Baker / May / Tuku Hau Tapuha also on the books.

The Butchers can also be moved up to play minutes as props in games - possibly Xavier Va'a and talk of Developing Siua Wong into a Prop as well

Only 2 spots in the 30 left and these players (27-30) are usually the lowest paid - 80k or so.

If they are to be filled I figure it will be 2 players from the extended squad - Ethan Roberts(SR) / Xavier Va'a(PR) / Ethan King(FB)/Jordan Swann (CE) / Tyler Moriarty (HK) or development contract players upgraded - Tom Deakin (HK) / Sandon Smith (HB/FE) / Vuate Karawalevu (WG)

Ethan Roberts reportedly signed a senior contract and is training full time with the NRL squad but is only listed in the extended squad at this stage

Decent depth cover signing, and the last two seasons have shown that our depth was lacking within the backs.
