  • A few insights from 'Guru'

I have NFI why Bloke in a Bar calls the guy with the beard a 'guru' (does he have a podcast or something under that name? I dunno). However, I didn't appreciate that he's got a relative in Easts' development systems and seems to track our players pretty closely.

IMO it's worth listening to his comments in the following two videos:

He's got a lot of praise for our culture/systems. A few points I liked were:

    - He talks a lot about how we develop loyalty in our ranks. Examples include Billy Smith during his injuries (who apparently trains very hard & preaches about our culture to juniors), Lodge being on train & trial without dramas, Maubs' role with juniors and Pearce having nothing but praise for our systems when talking to juniors.

    - He's seen Karawalevu play regularly and says he's an absolute freak who's gonna be like Vunivalu in terms of pace and athleticism. Apparently he chased an attacking kick for touch, caught it on the full and went over for a meat pie. As an ex-sprinter I LOVE hearing this stuff... I know players float the ball and whatever but at my absolute peak (running at nationals as an explosive, sprinting specialist... also known for doing power dunks over big dudes while playing state league basketball) I could only dream of doing this sorta thing on a footy field! This kinda stuff makes me throb!!!

    - Claims Souffs tried to poach Rads as a junior. They called his manager and were told 'don't even bother... he would never sign with your club'.

He said he doesn’t support any team. But out of any team he has watched the roosters the most. He is an Allianz stadium member so basically goes to every roosters home game.

He originally started out as winning nrl fantasy and started a Instagram page nrl fantasy guru then moved in to what he is today. He is pretty cluey on all thing league. If you go back and listen to his podcast on Allianz stadium he talks about some awesome roosters moments over the years.

Aaaah interesting. I remember them having their 'lone scout' too (I quit NRL Fantasy as it required way too much commitment and they always changed the rules). Must know his numbers and random players well... looks like a general sports fan.

His younger brother played Harold Matt's last year and has been in the Roosters junior rep sides for a few years. Has always been a Roosters kid. Lovely kid and family - my boy played rep cricket with him up until the 16s. The kid is a naturally gifted sportsman and played reps in Cricket, League and Basketball as a kid. I don't know the Guru very well at all but do the rest of the family.

I know Ism pumps the Bloke In A Bar type gigs, I usually dodge them. But had a listen to some of this one.

One of the cats mentioned they thought Rads was the better ball player than either Yeo or Murray. Have to agree, good to hear that opinion is shared. He has lost some caste of public opinion to the other too, mainly for being out of the picture for long stints I think. Expecting a huge year from the wild one.
