Using B-Moz as an example, I think he was in top shape when he did his ACL. Similar with Collins (selected for Origin + coming of age), Verrills (had just won a premiership and was cementing a starting #9 spot) and Sitili (had won himself a regular spot in 1st grade).
New players often comment that you don't know a training session until Robbo's kicked your butt. Makes me wonder if our 'warrior mentality' style coaching needs an adjustment whereby we are all 'warriors' but will listen to the warning signs if something's feeling iffie.

Maybe with a reduced game time and workload he could perhaps play a freer role with less structure in his game?

Enough to get the Tigpies out of a hole? We'll see. Be guessing the Riff chose to drop him before considering the prospect of losing Cleary, Luai or Edwards (none of whom you'd release unless they actively want out and are threatening to kick stones like a certain player did to us a few years back IMO).
A top 5 hooker but getting close to his final NRL contract. Has had a few weird indiscretions in the past too, which makes me wonder whether there's a reason clubs keep moving him on.

Kurtley Beale did his Patella (Torn clean off the Bone- see x-rays below - Left is normal and Right is Beale's Torn Patella ) - I think he was out for 6 months or so ? - The NRL Physio say's recovery time is 6 to 9 months when surgery is required
