  • Joseph Suallii future

Looks like this will be in the media over the next few months until he makes a decision which could be very distracting on the team....

Sydney Roosters star fullback Joseph Suaalii is reportedly yet to take up his player option for the 2024 season.

Suaalii is now a year-by-year proposition at the tri-colours. His deal is set to expire completely at the end of next season, but the final two years of that contract - being 2023 and 2024 - were both set as player options.

The young gun, who has played predominantly on the wing for the Roosters, but is earmarked as a long-term option at fullback after playing the role for Samoa at the 2022 Rugby League World Cup in England, has taken his option to remain part of Trent Robinson's side in 2023.

It comes after a 2022 season where he became one of the NRL's best breakout talents, being selected to the New South Wales Blues extended State of Origin squad despite being just 19 years of age. He scored 15 tries in 19 NRL games during the campaign, having made his debut at the back end of the 2021 season as a 17-year-old.

His desire to move to fullback could yet prove part of the problem at the Roosters, as could money, with James Tedesco locked in at the club long-term, and Joseph Manu also re-signing, with the gun New Zealander set to be stuck in the centres.

News Corp's Phil Rothfield told Sky Sports Radio's Big Sports Breakfast on Monday that between NRL clubs and the Wallabies, the Roosters will struggle to hang onto him.

“I just don't see where they are going to be in a position to pay him, despite the fact he is still a teenager, the eight, nine hundred-thousand, towards a million dollars, that other clubs would be prepared to pay for the brightest young star in rugby league," Rothfield said.

“Having said that I know he loves the Roosters, he loves Trent Robinson, he's really grateful for the fact the club has educated him so patiently to help him adjust to the rigours of day in, day out NRL football.

“The other question is the Wallabies, they have struggled a lot in recent times to have big-name players.

“The Roosters don't want to put pressure on him but eventually he is going to have to make a decision… because he is off-contract at the end of this year and they need a call on him.”

It's understood multiple clubs are already showing interest in Suaalii, but it's the Wallabies who could prove the biggest threat.

The Australian Rugby Union has previously spoken about having cash to burn in the lead-up to the 2027 Rugby World Cup, with the tournament serving as a chance for some of the NRL's top stars to change to the 15-man code and play one of sport's biggest tournaments at home.

Suaalii is believed to be at the top of that list, while others include Angus Crichton and Cameron Murray.

We just need to expect that JS probably won't be with us long term. Just like RTS he will go for more $$$$ eventually. Every season we can get outta him will be a bonus and hopefully we can win a couple of comps with him still in our colours

Yep. It was the gamble we took that brought him here and with that gamble comes the uncertainty.

I pray we can hold onto him longer but I don’t think we can.

If he does leave, then I hope he goes to rugby. Couldn't stomach to see him line up against us wearing another team's colours

I'd be surprised if he left us.
He is the best prospect in the entire rugby league and union world and will be a champion of the game by the time he retires. Uncle Nick and Robbo will do everything they can to keep him. We have some guys on high salaries that are approaching their used by dates so we will juggle the numbers to give him what he wants.
But the media will play the "how can they pay him what he wants card" to make sure we look like cap cheats if he stays.
Didn't Walsh go to the Broncos for half of what the Dolphins offered? Where there's a will....

We have the Australian, kiwi and Samoan fullback in our team at the same time .Enjoy it while it lasts .
Fullback money has made all the best athletes in the game want to play 1 position.
I think JS is gone unfortunately, I cant see how they can all possibly stay.

I see him as a bit of a mercenary, and not in a bad way, similar to SBW, has heaps of talent, can play different codes, and has a chance to make a heap of money for a long time.

I like him, but unless he signs a decent extension with us, I’m not getting to attached to him.

My only response is that we didn't let Latrell look around... we demanded certainty and refused to discuss his ambition to play FB. This is AFTER he had played Origin, won 2 premierships with us (3 if you include junior grades) and validly wanted to know whether he could do better than $800k on the open market.

Is there a reason why JS has this buffer? Once upon a time he was 17 and it made sense. Now? I love the guy and wanna sign him forever but it sounds like his manager's gonna be testing the water all season potentially.

Guessing JS's been more mature about it and we think he has more potential? Whereas we've seen 'Trell's potential and it doesn't seem to involve 20km runs around Bangkok every night to lose a few kegs & prep himself to zip around every single play like Teddy / Edwards / Ponga / Kennedy...etc. It just involves him getting paid more and having the status gained by the title of 'fullback'.

                    I feel the same way.

The kid has to look after his future and his family, every time you run out could be the last time you do so you need to get a good deal. Having said that we have no idea what he wants to achieve personally and that will play a part in his decision for example he might want to captain Samoa in the next world cup, win a premiership ring maybe play for the Blues but if he remains in league he has strong ties with the chooks and that will be very important in any decision he makes also we are a powerful club and have a real chance of winning a couple of premierships i

I think he'll stay but will demand a good size upgrade when the next longer term contract is due.

He has already previously stated how much he loves the club, the culture & coaching staff. He's still very young & knows all the benefits waiting for him at the Roosters in the not too far future.

This is all media speculation that he wants more money & wants to play fullback. Maybe money isn't a driving factor for him at this early stage & playing first grade at a great club & bidding his time for a little longer is more important to him.

I'd be really surprised if he wasn't here for another 2-3yrs minimum.

i have a feeling he'll stay a bit longer. He's very mature for his age and would know the benefit of staying with prestige club like us vs signing short sighted deals

Personally I think Like Keary will retire after 2023 and much of that money will be used for Suaalii's upgrade.
