  • Line Up for 2023

With some recent pics on the Roosters facebook page for the new hat, I noticed something interesting, if you look at the picture of Joey Manu you can see that on the other side next to Toops is Joey Suaalii then in the 2nd picture where it shows the reverse angle, it looks like Jaxson Paulo is on the right side of Manu.

So this is looking abit like Suaalii is training at left centre, while right wing is Paulo.

Not much to go by since it's just training, but could be a glimpse of the 2023 backline
    1. Teddy
    2. Toops
    3. Suaalii
    4. Manu
    5. Paulo

I can't read too much into it, but they would be preparing for everything.

We have to beat all and sundry being from the East.

Is Paulo tall? There would be some height and aerial ability in that backline that would make a lot of teams nervous.

No I reckon you are on the money mate. A SuperCoach fan who often travels out to our training has posted on his FB page the same thing.

      That is one sexy backline.

Any backline without Momirovski and Hutchison has me aroused

If Momo is outside the 17 perhaps he may be looking at a release. I don't think he figured he would end up a reserve grader.

                Roosters opposed sessions have

Walker, Manu, Paulo on the right with Keary, Suaalii and Tupou on the left.

Goodluck catching any high balls coming up against Suaali and Tupou.

Fingers crossed Momo won't play 1st grade this year.

Two big unknown quantities in terms of, 1) does Paulo have more to him than he showed at Souths because if he doesn't then I don't see him lasting out the year. And 2) how will Suaali go in the centres, defensively I have no concerns but offensivley I thought he struggled in his opportunities at fullback to ball play, all good centres must know how to put their winger away otherwise they risk being predictable and easy to defend.

Cleary terrorised Paulo with kicks when he played for Souths, I've got serious reservations about him on the wing and I think we lose one of our great strengths in Suaalii hitting the ball up. Time will tell but I'm not a fan.

Agree. Paulo is a worry under the bomb. He ain’t no Brett Morris. I don’t think he’s quick either. He’s a big body.

I would have more faith in Paulo being in the 17 than Momo. Paulo is fairly quick, is a big body who can cart it up and has height aswell to be an aerial threat. His best games for Souffs were in the centres so I wouldn't be surprised if Suallii doesn't see ball in the centres, they'll swap the two and put him back on the wing. Paulo's publicised errors were dropping bombs, which is always a confidence thing and can happen to anyone. When Toops first started, he was rocks and diamonds under the high ball. Even Joey Manu, Fatrell and basically anyone who has had an extended career in the NRL in the outside backs has had issues with high balls at times.

Momo on the other hand, looked like a bloke off the street had been planted into a first grade 17 for much of last season. His defence was absolutely abysmal and given he is not a potent attacking threat with speed and footwork, I cannot see how he gets a run in this side again unless there are injuries. I'm not hating on the guy, seems a good bloke and has played some decent footy in the past, but last season he was a disgrace with his defensive reads and efforts.

Hutch not in the outside backs convo, if he's in the 17, it'll be on the bench as utility.

He's not super quick mate but neither is Momo! He's quick enough and a big body to cart it up. I'd give him first crack.

Sadly I don't think any winger is a Brett Morris. Probably best winger of the last 25-30 years. Miss that guy so much!
