Knight blow as Roosters win race for star

The race is over for the signature of one of rugby league’s most in-demand free agent, and it’s bad news for the Newcastle Knights.

I knew the Roosters would get him.

Dominic Young has dealt Newcastle a devastating blow on the eve of their NRL premiership opener after informing the Knights of his plans to join the Sydney Roosters next season.

Young, coming off a scintillating World Cup for England, is understood to have also informed the Dolphins and Gold Coast Titans of his plans to link with the Roosters in 2024.

However, the news was of most significance to the Knights, who invested their faith in Young and turned him into an international superstar.

The Knights did everything they could to keep the 21-year-old but their attempts to sign him to a long-term deal appear to have come up short as he prepares to move to Sydney’s eastern suburbs next season.

The Dolphins and Titans had also made big plays for Young but it wasn’t enough as the Roosters wielded out their big guns in an attempt to sign the England international.

News Corp recently reported that Roosters coach Trent Robinson wined and dined Young as part of their recruitment plan and he appears to have worked his magic.

Young is understood to have received offers in excess of $500,000 a season from rival clubs but the chance to join the Roosters was too tempting.

News Corp understands that Young held further talks with his management on Monday night as he weighed up whether to stay at the Knights, move to Sydney or accept the lucrative dollars on offer in south-east Queensland

The Dolphins’ interest in Young was well known but News Corp understands that the Titans threatened to blow the other clubs out of the water with their bid for the try-scoring winger.

Their attempt to poach Young came as they fought their own battle to keep David Fifita, who has his own big money offer on the table from Canberra.

Young, however, is the first domino to fall as a handful of the game’s biggest names - led by Mitchell Moses and Fifita - prepare to make a call on their playing futures over the next fortnight.

Love it and the fume it will create if it happens. Would have to presume this is Toops’ last year if Young is coming

Fantastic news, certainly no guarantee he will be a player who can be part of sustained success at the club however the raw potential he clearly has is very promising. I hope personally Toops stays on at least another year after Young joins, I don't think Young is anywhere near being able to fill Toops shoes.

Is he as good as they say? I'll have to watch him closer the next time the Knights play.

If the rumoured Momo trade goes ahead, what chance he comes for this season?

Has anyone seen anyone else have dinner at Robbo's place?

Will be interesting to see what the fall out of this will be, have to imagine it means someone’s moving on.

Good signing though, his numbers are strong and very much profiles as a Robinson type of winger.

Interesting use of language by Dom from an article a few days ago that I felt looked likely he’d be joining the Chooks.

He seemed to be talking like he had already left.

Fantastic news. Liked him for a long time now. Raw talent. Lots of pace. Huge future. Lovely. To stand out in that rubbish Newcastle side is a feat in itself.

Toops always has a role at the club for mine. I'd love them both to play at least a season together. Could be a master and apprentice sort of deal. I'd assume he will stay and its why Jaxson Paulo was brought in on a 1 year deal.

Everyone is assuming that this will now be Toups last year. He’s only 31 and I think he’s still got a lot to offer. I doubt he would want to leave for another club in the NRL. He has stayed loyal for a long time when he could have accepted more money to go elsewhere. I hope that the club can offer him an extra year or two. He would probably stay for peanuts.

So they could have Dominic Young and Lewis Murphy on the Books in 2024 if these reports are correct that the Roosters have signed both of them.

Not sure if I am reading it correctly but it seems Dominic Young signed for less money than offered by other Clubs ?
