  • Sydney Roosters hand Dylan Napa shock lifeline

The Sydney Roosters signings keep on coming. A day after landing Panthers star Spencer Leniu in a transfer coup they’ve welcomed a familiar face back into the fold.

The Sydney Roosters have thrown a rugby league lifeline to premiership winner Dylan Napa.

It is understood Napa has agreed to a second-tier deal with the Roosters to be part of their NSW Cup squad with the hope of returning to the NRL.

Napa reached out to the Roosters last week after being released from his deal with Super League club Catalans Dragons. The Roosters have agreed to give him a minimal contract with match payments.

Napa could return to the top grade for the Roosters later in the season. He played 122 games for the tricolours during his six-season stint which included the 2018 premiership triumph.

That was his last game for the club before he was released to sign a rich three year contract at the Bulldogs.

He had mixed success at Canterbury playing 54 matches in three seasons before linking with Catalans last year, playing 20 games for the French-based side. Napa has also played seven State of Origin matches for Queensland – the last being in 2019.

His contract is a far cry from the $600,000 a season he earned at the Bulldogs and the deal is just for the rest of the season. It is understood Napa was at Roosters training on Tuesday.

The Roosters have a strong middle rotation led by Lindsay Collins, Matt Lodge and Jared Waerea-Hargreaves. Although there are some concerns regarding the fitness of Waerea-Hargreaves.

The likes of Waerea-Hargreaves, James Tedesco, Daniel Tupou, Joey Manu, Luke Keary and Victor Radley still remain from that premiership winning side

Why not second tier contract for norths. If he really wants an nrl return he’ll work his ass off and get back if not then no harm done to us and he disappears again

Big Papi is back! I would be shocked if he makes first grade at any point this season, outside of maybe 10 minutes off the bench in some mid year origin effected game. A bit like when FPN briefly came back in 2018

How good is this off-season turning out to be! Toops (apparently) on his last legs, Gus, Connor Gone, Jazza already injured, Joey with a fractured face, signed 2x Pommy Wingers, called cap cheats in the media, and now we have re-signed Napalm.

2023 is off to a great start.

As if the fans of others clubs aren’t crying enough after our beautifully executed Young and Leinu signings. Watch them all start saying he is world class, in his prime and on 800K a season.

Hoping he proves me wrong somehow........but I was never a big fan of Napa. Plodder.

Was good for big hit, but once shoulder charges were banned I was left thinking 'what does this guy actually....do'?

Judging by the tripe he dished up in last few NRL seasons, he'll struggle to make the NSW Cup side.

Don't think Big Papi is going to get anywhere near first grade.

I remember two great games from Napa, one against Souths where he took on all 3 Burgesses, and one against Canterbury where he ironed out their huge prop, plus a few other random hits. I think it will take a huge effort for him to get back into First Grade, but if he does it will be hats off.

Good luck to him - if he's keen you never know what he could produce.

He'll come with baggage, not luggage.
1985: 1 try vs Parramatta, 1 try vs Manly, 1 try vs Wests, 2 tries vs Souffs
1986: 2 tries vs Illawarra, 1 try vs Balmain, 2 tries vs Norths.
