  • Lewis Murhpy - ACL (Gone for 2023 Super League Season)

Another unfortunate news story coming out of the UK. Another British import outside back (Lewis Murphy) potentially coming to us next season out for the Super League 2023 season with an ACL injury. I'm not sure if the signing was official from our end but this latest development is going to cause some concerns.

Wakefield have confirmed that star winger Lewis Murphy has suffered an Anterior Cruciate Ligament injury, ruling him out for the remainder of the 2023 season.

Murphy, 20, left the field during the first half of Friday’s Super League fixture with Huddersfield at home.

Scans since have confirmed the severity of the injury.

Wakefield head coach Mark Applegarth said: “We are all really disappointed for Lewis and it’s a cruel blow.

“Everyone at the club will support him through his rehab and I know he will be relentless in coming back better than ever in 2024.”

The youngster has been heavily linked with a move to the NRL for 2024, meaning he is likely to have played his final game for Wakefield.

It has previously been reported by the Daily Telegraph that Murphy has ‘agreed terms’ to join Sydney Roosters in the NRL from the 2024 campaign.

Murphy enjoyed a breakthrough year in 2022, scoring 17 tries in 19 Super League appearances. He is currently off-contract at the end of the current season.
Lewis Murphy added to long Wakefield injury list

Murphy has been added to an already-long list of injuries in Applegarth’s squad, who are yet to pick up their first win of 2023.

The side will be without full-back Max Jowitt for up to three months due to ‘freak’ ankle injury sustained in training. He has since undergone surgery.

Forward Kelepi Tanginoa is expected to be sidelined for a few more rounds after tweaking a hamstring against Wigan.

Meanwhile, centre Reece Lyne has missed the last two games with a ‘medical issue’.

Applegarth provided the latest: “It is a medical issue as we’ve already released. We are still investigating it and making sure everything is right. As soon as I can give some more info on that, I will make sure it’s shared.

“I’ve got no real more information on it than we’ve already released. I don’t want to crystal ball it. But hopefully a week or two, then we should be able to give a lot more clarity.”

Well, very similar circumstances to Ryan Hall when he came to us. One thing I will say though is has there been anything concrete about him coming here?

In reading some of the English newspapers/online sites from that area (Yorkshire) they are reporting that he may have played his last game for Wakefield Trinity as it's been reported that he has agreed to terms to play NRL for the Roosters in 2024- 2 year deal.

Toops interview was interesting as he was asked a number of times about 2024 - I wouldn't say he was resigned to leaving as he is leaving that up to his manager to sort out but it may end up that way as well it will come down to money in the end not if they have a position for him

This is terrible news for our reserve grade. I wish him well soon.

We may as well wait till they do an ACL and then sign them, in future.

I can't see Roosters throwing away $250k long service allowance. Next eligible player I think is Manu in mid-2026.

Our injury curse extending to players before they even get here, I can't remember a team with as bad a run with luck as we have had in the last 3 years.

This is what I don't get, you would have to think we could keep Tupou for no more than 200k on top of the allowance.

I thought he had one of his best seasons in 2022. Webby might be right we are only interested in the shiny new toys.

The long service player allowance looks likely to increase to 250k per club - The players Union wanted it to be 500k

At least he'll have 12 months to recover.

He's also a much smaller frame than Hall, and should be less impacted by this injury, although I think everyone needs another 12 months playing to return to full speed and regain full confidence.

Already was a risk given the history of outside backs from the ESL but this makes it even worse obviously.

Like Waylander says, Halldog was a big body and was 31-32 when he came over here recovering from an ACL. Still though, I don't like Lewis' chances.
