I think I somewhat enjoyed the different style of footy that we played today, it was much more direct and punching through with forwards. If we can play a similar style with Rads back in, where we can punch through the middle, then every now and then go out the back and basically having Rads play through the 2 different options, it would add another option to our attacking style and leaves defensive lines guessing.

Here’s a positive, no side in Round 2 has run for metres than us.

Everyone single on of our outside backs ran for more than 100m.

      Tedesco - 203m
      Tupou - 198m
      Suaalii - 233m
      Manu - 137m
      Paulo - 160m

6 forwards ran for more than 100m.

      Collins - 184m (71 post contact)
      Baker - 119m (44 post contact)
      E.Butcher 108m (39 post contact)
      N.Butcher 108m (47 post contact)
      Whyte 109m (47 post contact)
      May 109m (52 post contact)

Rugby League is still a simple game, if you run for more metres than your opposition you generally do a pretty good job at controlling field position. Control field position and you can generally control the outcome of the game.

Fun stat: Out of the 14 games played so far in 2023, only 3 have been won by the side who ran for less metres with one of those 3 being the Dolphins Vs Raiders game tonight where the Raiders ran for 11m more than the Dolphins and that game could’ve gone either way.

These are the underlying stats and fundamentals that you want to see the side doing well early on in the season. The polish and intensity will come later but they delivered a performance that can be built on next week.

Good to see Terrel May come on, he gets a little better each game, could be a real damaging forward for us. And Whyte was a complete turnaround from last week.

Two points. And getting them while not playing well with a patched up side. That was close to a must win in round 2 as you can get with Soufffs coming up next week too.

              - Potential for more slicker attacking with better options in the lead up and last pass. Could've scored a couple more tries.
              - Lindsay's kicking game.
              - The biggest positive...30 something degrees positive! Nothing like paying good money for membership only to sit in a baking hot eastern side of the stadium. Many left seeking shade. I'm still recovering. Another reason the old stadium had it over the new, which had shaded areas on the bottom levels.

                Quite a few positives...

                1. Above all, we got the two points!

                2. Warriors defended well but we didn't break despite being a patched-up team. This was something in itself as we wad the field position and remained patient despite being unable to turn it into the sorta points we'll be capable of once we start to gel a bit more.

                3. Collins played to his potential and our forward rotation did a passable job (last week they failed) despite losing a marquee player.

                4. Walker's kicking has improved significantly (both his range and accuracy).

                5. Our backline's working for now. We didn't try rushing everything... we were patient and it paid off.

Even for a harsh critic like myself there were plenty of positives yesterday, mainly from the inexperienced forwards who stood up and did the job. Yes, we should have been 12+ points clear at half-time and there was still bombed tries and dumb football (at the worst times too)......but plenty of positives beyond the 2 premiership points.

Well.. I was very fortunate enough to be sitting in-line where he missed, actually going clean air for the try to the Warriors prop.

He had 2 dropped balls and looked cumbersome.

let me be clear, I’m being critical of his performance yesterday, that is all. I know he isn’t a seasoned player, and I’m aware of our list of injuries.

Sticking one’s head in the sand over his performance will only delay your inevitable discourse later

I even chose him in my SC team, so I too had I higher hopes for him

Has to be Lindsay Collins. Has been our best so far.

Not bad for someone seen as overrated.

Unavailable Forward pack was - JWH, Watson, Lodge, Angus, Sitili and Radley and we lost Brandon Early. Fair starting FW pack that would boost most clubs easily. It was a great win and a big step up for the boys.
Was ugly but a good one!

Special mention to all the Easts fans who attended the game on such a glorious beach day.

I was hugely impressed by the resilience.

Looking at our forward pack I thought we had no chance. But the boys were very brave given all the outs (in Rnd freaking 2!)

If we manage to win vs Souffs it'll easily be our most impressive win since the 2019 GF.

As always, if the effort is there, and we don’t get blown out, losing to them isn’t the end of the world. For me it’s always if we play well and lose, then so be it.
