  • Toops - ROOSTERS MOVE TO LOCK DOWN STAR WINGER

The Roosters are in negotiations to re-sign representative winger Daniel Tupou, a move that will help cover the potential loss of Joseph-Aukuso Suaalii to rugby union.

It was widely considered the signing of 21-year-old Knights winger Dominic Young from 2024 would act as a passing of the baton from the off-contract Tupou after 12 seasons with the tri-colours.

Tupou, the longest-serving member of the Roosters backline, having made his NRL debut with the club in 2012, also has no shortage of interest from the English Super League, with St Helens the lead suitor.

However, News Corp can reveal Tupou’s management have begun discussions with the Roosters to extend his contract, with the club eager to hold onto the prolific tryscorer, for at least one more season.

    There’s no suggestion, Tupou couldn’t re-sign until 2025.

The three-time premiership-winner turns 32 in June, but has proven a mainstay on the Roosters wing with superb average of 21 games across the past seven seasons.

His re-signing would mean the Roosters backline remains in-tact for at least 2024. It remains to be seen if Suaalii remains at the Roosters in 2024, should he ultimately sign with the ARU for 2025.

Providing he stays healthy, Tupou is on the verge of becoming the Roosters greatest try scorer of all-time.

Tupou has scored 136 tries in 228 games and is just four tries away from usurping club legend Anthony Minichiello’s all-time try scoring record of 139 tries.

Earlier this year, the modest Tupou admitted he felt embarrassed to be within reach of breaking Minichiello‘s record.

“I’m blessed to be able to come so close to reaching that milestone, but at the same time I don’t want it to be my main focus. I also don’t want to beat Mini’s amazing Roosters milestone,” Tupou said.

“He’s an all-time Roosters great and I don’t want to go past his milestone. He is one of the best players to have ever put on the jersey.”

    ROOSTERS - MOST TRIES

    139 A. Minichiello 302 games

    136 D. Tupou 228 games

    121 S. Kenny-Dowall 224 games

    104 B. Mullins 190 games

    93 D. Brown 94 games

Good news. Toops is a Roosters legend, I reckon he’s far from finished.

Great news. I've said it time and time again on here. If Toops wants to stay, he should call the shots. Undisputed Top 10 Rooster of all time. A legend!!

Still provides a lot aswell despite his age. He's never relied on pace too much and remains one of the best defensive wingers in the comp. Makes 150m+ a game.

The best winger we’ve had in my 40 odd years of supporting.

Let Toops stay as long as he wants. As long as we have back up.
I love the way he just scores and makes no fuss about it, and the work he does out of our end.
Dead set champion, the epitome of the quiet achiever

Remember the first 4-5 years of his career when the fans hated him because “he gets driven back too easily” good times, if it was up to them he would’ve been cut loose a decade ago.

Doesn’t take a good club long to make moves, 1 day later and they are making sure the back line is in tact for 2-3 years
with young and toia should be some good options

                  Love him to stay on...

How good was Dave Brown though?

Deserves to be in The Best Easts Team of the 21st Century.
Personally and undoubtably Toops is the best Easts specialist winger I’ve seen. I say that confidently and he is better than legendary Bill Mullins. I was fortunate to see Bill play in his prime.

The long serving player discount of $250 k per club makes it a no brainer to re-sign him for 2 years at least - what would he be on 400 k say - be only 150k included under the cap.

I can hear Tallis blowing up now on hearing this although he doesn't seem to know how the cap works

This is good news. He's one of the best club men I've seen.
1985: 1 try vs Parramatta, 1 try vs Manly, 1 try vs Wests, 2 tries vs Souffs
1986: 2 tries vs Illawarra, 1 try vs Balmain, 2 tries vs Norths.

For me also, without a doubt. Does things in cruise mode that other wingers can't do in any mode. A truly great winger.

Toops loves the Roosters & the Roosters love Toops.

So humble & is worried about passing Mini's record when in fact he also is a Roosters legend.

To do it in around 70 games less than Mini is an amazing achievement.
