  • Jaxson Paulo and Roosters

The Sydney Roosters and Jaxson Paulo may be embroiled in difficult contract negotiations as the winger is yet to take up an option to extend his contract.

While many wouldn't have anticipated Paulo's great start to the season, the 23-year-old has managed to score five tries in four games.

Unfortunately for the Roosters, this great start may cost them in the long term. Currently, on a minimum wage deal, Paulo joined the club on a two-year contract with a second-season option.

However, according to The Daily Telegraph, Paulo is yet to take up his option. This could mean he may enter his third team in three years if he wants a pay increase, as the Roosters may run into salary cup troubles.

As Dominic Young arrives from the Knights next season and Daniel Tupou is expected to sign a one-year extension, there may be no room for Paulo at the Roosters.

Sydney also have Corey Allan and Billy Smith off-contract, but there is yet to be more news regarding either of the player's contract situation.

Can’t blame him if he goes elsewhere for better money than minimum wage

The Roosters have the following players off contract at the end of 2023 who are able to sign with other clubs now - Daniel Tupou has or will reportedly sign a one year extension for 2024.

Surely the Hutchinator is re-signed - come on Robbo make it happen

Nathan Brown, Billy Smith, Connor Watson, Corey Allan, Daniel Tupou, Drew Hutchison, Fletcher Baker, Jake Turpin, Jared Waerea-Hargreaves, Jaxson Paulo (PO 2024), Thomas Deakin, Vuate Karawalevu

I'm truly touched that the media lose so much sleep over who will stay or go from the roosters. They spend so much time and energy speculating.

I wish I could let them know we will be fine, and they can stop worrying about us so much.

We don’t need him when we have that speedster Hutch in the side. Get him on the wing now!

Wild that a guy hasn't activated his option for next year after 4 games, just crazy, I can't believe it.

It’s Round 5, seriously. There’s a lot to play out between now and the end of the season.

I see no rush for Jaxson to advise us on whether he wants to take up the option and I’m sure if he’s still playing this well in 3-4 months time we will find a way to make him an improved offer.

Until that point it’s silly speculating.

All depends when the player option has to be activated - By round 10 seems to be the figure that is mentioned for a few contracts that have such clauses as the deadline for a player to take up this option - Mitchell Moses for an example has this time line in his contract for the player option.

You wouldn't be waiting until the end of year to take up the option though if intending to stay at a club if there is no deadline mentioned in the contract and of course Clubs would want to know as well either way.

It’s a win win for Jaxson what ever he decides..

Came to the Roosters when he’s value was at its lowest due to his form at the end of last year with the Rabbits, now he has the chance to lift his value again and earn a bigger contract elsewhere next year.

Other option, he waits an extra year with the Roosters and further lifts his value which in turn earns a cracker deal the following year with us or another Club.

Either way good luck to him

If he goes elsewhere for more money next season he's mad. He's settled in well here, is playing first grade and playing well, and he's going to ditch that and start all over at another new club next season? He said in an interview last week that as soon as he arrived at the club he felt like he was "home'.

                        Just my take on things.

Brown - I think he will sign for another year
Watson - I think he will sign for another year or 2
Smith - cut our losses? Leaves us short every year.
                        Allan - bye bye
King Toops - 1 more year
                        Hutch - another year
Baker - stays if not enticed with a big offer elsewhere. I dont think we will compete if money is thrown at him.
Turps - stays if not enticed with a big offer elsewhere. I dont think we will compete if money is thrown at him.
JWH - Thank for the memories big dog.
                        Paulo - takes Smith's money.
                        Deakin - reserves
                        VK - bye bye

Even if Paulo wasn't on a second year option he would likely get an upgrade on current form. The last thing the club would want is a player they want to keep getting annoyed at being underpaid, and then signing for another club out of spite.

Patience. He stays next year then he has a long term deal replacing Toups.

Listening to Connor Watson on ABC radio last weekend they were asking him about his contract situation for next year. He sounded a long way away from confident he'd still be with us.
