As somebody who's been an elite athlete, one reason why I left running was that I'd have long spells where I was training harder than ever, eating the strictest diet (all scientific - no fad BS), lifting ridiculous weights and using far more efficient running techniques (again, as assessed by experts watching video replays). However, I'd show up at nationals and choke.
I had moments where I cried myself to bed (in my little attic room at the top of a Paddo terrace) because after training 2-3 times a day for years, some coach would approach me at a meet to say 'dude you have so much potential... if you started training, you could be up there with the best!!!' How do you respond to that?
Anyhow my point (which IMO other elite athletes who have been through lulls would agree with) is that sometimes your lulls make no sense at all. I suspect our current one may be like that and it's difficult to dig deep when you know you're already training harder than anybody else.
I dunno the solution. My one skein of hope is that Robbo ALWAYS looks forward. This can hurt but I'm confident that at very least we'll make the 8 this year... he does it every year. I know we expect better, but that's because we're a well oiled machine with a higher ceiling.
Premierships depend on all the stars aligning. 2023 might not be our year but Robbo's a skilled fisherman who's always got a decent lure hanging out there. He has a habit of catching big fish, but you've gotta be patient in between as he doesn't bother with the small ones.
