  • A question re the penalty that led to us going up 2-0

The Warriors drop-out after 3 minutes was adjudged to have not crossed the 10m line. Tedesco pounced on the ball and looked semi-dangerous as if something might come of it.

Why did Butler blow an immediate penalty and not allow play to go on?

I'm assuming it's an automatic penalty even if the attacking team chose to take a risk with the ball already in hand.

1985: 1 try vs Parramatta, 1 try vs Manly, 1 try vs Wests, 2 tries vs Souffs
1986: 2 tries vs Illawarra, 1 try vs Balmain, 2 tries vs Norths.

I wondered the same thing whether you could play an advantage in such a scenario.

I assume because the ball never crossed the 10m it was never ‘live’.

Yeah its an auto penalty, the ball is not in play because it hasn't gone the distance, same as if teddy touched it first before going the distance, a penalty to the Warriors

Ball is dead in such circumstances.

Play is then restarted with a penalty to the non offending side from the centre of the 20m line.

Same for kick off's with play restarted with a penalty to the non offending side from the centre of the half way line
