Anyone who knows football will tell you Latrell is a once in a lifetime player but if your too bitter to acknowledge that then that’s your problem.
On his day Latrell can be a matchwinner, but to call him a once in a lifetime player is a ridiculous mass exaggeration. Did you not ever see the likes of Fittler Johns Lewis Meninga Slater Thurston etc in your liftime ?So i dont think anyone would agree that Latrell is the best player they have ever seen.

      Lifetime or generational?

I player needs to fulfil his potential to be a generational athlete in their chosen sport. Mitchell has a long way to go!

For me, the one that hurt the most after his breakout year at FB. Was Roger…..

most of those players trained hard and pushed their limits, Freddie and Latrell could do it with very little effort, but huge results, just not consistently, probably why both didn’t/haven’t reach the heights of the others, Latrell still has time though.

I think Freddy reached some very good heights. My biggest regret with him was his coaching career with us. What a train wreck.

Generational is the better word, my bad.

Why would he leave the club that I loved and assumed he did too? Hell, I had met him and got his autograph so to me, he had an obligation to stay! It was like a personal contract and here he was, breaking it! The next 'favourite player' for me was Trevor Gillmeister. So, it was sad to see him go. Since then, I'd say Adrian Morley. It was just sad that the game basically chased him out. He was our JWH back then.

On a different tangent, I remember the back page of the paper emblazoned with the news that Easts were going to sign Wally Lewis and Gene Miles. A few years later, another back page screamed that we had thrown the cheque book at Brad Clyde and Ian Roberts. What could have been if either of those reports proved true! I often wonder if there were two players that could transform a club right now, who might they be?
Im so with you.....i was wrecked when Noel Cleal left.

I was there when Trevor Gillmeister played his first trial for us. When he ran on i thought Barney Rubble is going to be smashed. Opposition players thought the same and ran straight at him...then the Axe fell and the carnage happened!

I also remember the Wally Lewis -Gene Miles report on the back of The Sun newspaper- it coincided with Arthur Beetson coming to coach us after a successful period as Qld coach. The closest we got is when Combined Brisbane beat us in the 1983 midweek Panasonic Cup final- and keeping with tradition in those days the players swapped jerseys after the game, so there is the pic of Wally Lewis wearing Mike Edens jersey holding up the cup while being chaired by Greg Dowling and Richie Poulsen also in a Roosters jersey. I think there was also a pic of Mal Meninga wearing Glenn Leggetts jersey in the dressing room after the game. Great advert for City Ford, unlucky for whoever sponsored Combined Brisbane. Anyone got any of the above pictures to share???

From memory , the picture of Wally in the city ford jersey was on the cover of the next big league.

My eldest son was born in 93. I gave his middle name as James in Mathews honour.

Players come and go so I don’t get too upset when they leave. I do though remember how upset my Daughter was who was 7 at the time when she saw Jimmy Maloney had left and was playing for Cronulla In fact she lost a lot of interest in it all after that
