  • Martin Kennedy

    Article in today's Daily Telegraph:

Martin Kennedy lost his $1.5m contract, his family, his freedom and almost his life. Now the former NRL star is making the most remarkable of comebacks, writes Phil Rothfield.

$500 a week in match payments with the old North Sydney Bears - and he's not ruling out playing NRL again.
Kennedy is now doing a builder's apprenticeship.
"I can say now I'm in better nick than when I was 18 or 19.
That's in strength and fitness. Plus there's some experience and perspective now.
I love the game and I've thrown myself into it."
    *
"There's a little Roosters badge on the Norths jersey. It's a start."

"I wish I could take it all back now but I've been well and truly punished."
"And I've now got this new found level of gratitude."

    #####

mmm, we are the Club of second chances, our ship is sinking fast, wouldn't hurt to monitor his progress, for future possible enlistment.
Big, strong, a not worn out 34, could come in handy at a good price.

      Indeed.
      I like your thinking.
Surely he would come at basement level salary and cap price.

He’s 34 years old, has spent the last two years in jail
and was mediocre when he was 25 let alone now

I actually sent buzz a spotted when I saw Kennedy was the 18th man for the Bears earlier in the season. I didn’t hear anything back and had assumed he was interested until last when Buzz emailed me and thanked me for the tip and told me he’d been talking to Martin and doing a story on him. Sometimes being the kind of pathetic fan who checks the team sheet of every grade pays off

I wish him well and hope he gets his life back on track but there’s a zero percent chance he returns to first grade, so I wouldn’t worry about that. Has yet to even play NSW Cup, still playing for the Hills Bulls.

He is actually a really warm hearted bloke. Not sure where things went wrong for him but he has left his run too late.

It's a ripper at times. We have guys bagging out the coach for -playing people out of position and then you read another post about moving Teddy or Rads to 5/8th. Now we want a 34yo who wasn't even that good as a 24yo

We were flogged by 40+ points last game.
Wouldn't hurt to monitor his progress...seeing as how *everyone* else seems to be judged as not being up to standard.

In the story it says he'd done 692 of his 700 community service hours, then the dpp appealed and he got 2.5 years jail...
