  • Change of topic…

The current woes of the NRL squad have been/ are/ & will continue to be thrashed out, not just on this forum but I suspect, any & every other RL media platform… Vossy & co take great delight in highlighting all things going wrong with the Chooks… gees he must of been a real gun himself on the footy field… his talk definitely suggests so?

Anyway my post is RE the NSWCup competition… just for a change of scenery. Does anyone know why, after deciding to enter a Cup side into the comp, the Bears (in their last year of agreement as a feeder to the Chooks) were given free reign to sign up the cream of the crop in terms of experience & talent, for their 2023 Cup campaign, as opposed to the Chooks signing/retaining that talent for their own side?

I might have it wrong… but could anyone shed any light? Was it to help the Bears push their cause for RE-instatement into the nrl?

Were we happy to field a much weakened Cup side wearing the Tri-Colours for the sake of… ?

I believe also, not content with who they had been granted with, from the Chooks, the Bears also wanted to claim Wong & a couple of others?

I’m no footy guru… so Maybe winning/dominating a Cup comp is not high on the club’s agenda… NRL is all that matters (which, I agree as the ultimate goal) but one has to think, the talent pool has to come from somewhere, & be developed/nurtured in a successful culture to achieve further success? The Chicken/Egg argument, which comes first?…

There must be some logical reasoning behind not waiting just one more year to establish a strong Cup side, …which surprise surprise, might yield some good fruit?

There’s still enough rounds in this NRL comp & the Chooks will fight their way back!

Not sure why the Roosters didn't wait until the agreement with North expired before entering their own team in NSW Cup but this season in NSW Cup was always going to be a transition year.

Not sure either how it was decided which players are allocated to the two sides either. - Norths I understand wanted Wong/ Sandon Smith / Xavier Va'a and Tyler Moriarty allocated to them.

The Roosters NSW Cup have been competitive in a lot of games - unlucky not to have a few more wins on the board.

The Question will also be are these players development being hampered when playing with a largely inexperienced group of players at NSW Cup level - Would it have been more beneficial development wise for these players to play for a much more experienced North Sydney Bears side?

I understand the seamless Juniors to Seniors pathways system concept for both Male and Female players they want to create - i.e from Andrew Johns Cup (Under 16's ) through to NRL and Lisa Fiaola Cup (under 17's ) through to NRLW.

It is something that most clubs have but some such as Penrith do it much better than others.

The Penrith players in the Junior and Senior Reps basically all train and play the same way as the Panthers NRL side so it's a seamless progression as players are developed and move through that pathway system.

By having the same training regime and playing style (Grind footy) throughout the system the players know what is expected and don't have to start from scratch when they progress because their coaches have different training regimes and playing styles.

One would say the Roosters will be doing something similar when all the Junior and Senior pathways are under the one umbrella. I assume this will also include Glebe Dirty Reds in some way shape or form.

When watching the Tarsha Gale cup Grandfinal Tarsha Gale who was commenting was talking about the conversations she has had with Roosters CEO Joe Kelly.

The Roosters will be significantly increasing the funding and commitment to junior and senior pathways for both Male and Female players under the seamless junior and senior pathways systems

They also have the two academies in operation - Sydney Roosters and Central Coast Roosters and development squads - upping recruitment and scouring Australia and New Zealand etc for junior talent.

A long term plan to be number 1 from Junior reps to NRL and NRLW - Have to wait to see how it all pans out.

2024 will be interesting - Not sure how long players without NRL contracts are signed for by NSW Cup sides - For an example Norths players still with an ambition to play NRL won't have that opportunity if playing for a standalone North Sydney Bears side whose has no link to an NRL club.

Norths maybe in some bother in 2024 and going forward in retaining or signing players as a result.

Whether in hybrid form Norths will be admitted to the NRL again is to be determined - Perth or WA/Pacifica Bears

Thank you for the response… a lot to think about. Agree, although an inexperienced Cup side, the Roosters have punched well above their weight & have been well in the contest in most games. Here’s hoping the tree bears some more good fruit into the future.

Warriors NSW Cup side has some very good ' big, strong and fast' players.
As I remember, our NSW Cup side is *full* of Sam Walker look alikes.
