  • Quotes form Robbo's Roosters radio interview

Any positives amongst the misery from last week?
    "Billy Smith/ They are hurting"

"I'm not a huge play guy, I'm a movement guy"
"If you play tennis or golf, you know not to grip he racquet or the club too hard. We're gripping the club too tightly"

When Teddy said there was low effort last week, what did he mean?

"Effort plays in include kick pressure, kick chase, forcing errors, and supports. Our biggest problem is supports"
"We're running hard, but we're not moving together"
"We've been the number one supporting team for a decade, now we're below mid table, and that's rare for us"

What does connecting on the field mean?

"It means intuition. Do I see something"
"It's not a light switch you can turn on and off"
"If you have it, you'll be pulled into that spot"
"That cord has been cut for much of this year"

    Changes
"Not a question of Sam or Joey, they'll both play lots of games"

"It's all on me to create the right environment and win games, it's all on me and no-one else"

Do you still enjoy coaching as much as in previous years?
"How could I not. This what footy's about. Find a solution. This is why I coach"

A good article from Mike Meehall on the Roosters drop off in the supports area that Teddy & Robbo have been referencing.

I thought it was pretty insightful.

Yes it is Robbo. I like that talk right now.

I am in two minds about that Jacks Fur Coat, if I take his comments literally (and I haven't heard the audio so I don't have tone or context to work with). I feel like it's also on the players. Robbo can't do it without them. Likely he is trying to take the pressure off them, likely he's had a good look in the mirror too. I love his willingness to be accountable. However, teamwork is what will get it done, not individualism.

All he’s doing is taking the pressure off his players as he knows his job is safe..

                  Makes perfect sense

                  Forcing errors and Kick pressure

Dependant on your D in forcing errors from your opposition - poor judgement / poor pass/lose carriers and what not - Kick pressure too as if your D is allowing the opposition to make easy yardage down to your red zone or near red zone then it's a different type of kick (attacking one ) compared to a general field or kick out of trouble one if struggling to make yardage. Need to put pressure on the kickers either way but be mindful of not conceding penalties or sin bins from late/high tackles on the kicker.

Kick chase and supports - A Tricky one the kick chase as the Roosters certainly don't have distance kickers so making maximum yardage and getting to the kick each set the highest percentage possible is paramount ( (set completions)

Support play - need players in motion and in numbers in support - too much one out play in offense and putting little pressure on the oppositions D by not taking on or bending the oppositions D line or digging into the D line as they call it

The Roosters have never been a big offloading team and or great in support play - seen many a line break with no players in support so the opportunity for points goes begging.

Players need to follow and support the ball carrier and anticipate that they could be passed the ball or the ball carrier may make a line or half line break and back that break up in numbers - Don't pass the ball when no play is on- take the tackle and go again - seen in so many games players passing the ball to a player not expecting it or when they needed to take the tackle.

Effort plays are important. Effort on effort play's help break down the opposition and win premierships. We’re a long way off but I think our season will improve significantly.

So he’s straight said we’re not the same team this year in terms of collective effort and there is a disconnect there?

Maybe chicken and egg argument but we are last in possession, so run mtrs and support plays etc are always gonna be less. That’s not to say support play isn’t a problem it clearly is but some extra context is important. Even if using averages; we are often carting it out of our end, fatigued and playing one out.
