There are two stats covering this - Supports and Push Supports
Basically supports are players supporting the ball carrier who put themselves into positions to be passed the ball by the ball carrier in range of various game situations
Some basic examples of supports which would be included in these stats
You are running the ball up and on both sides you have support players - In D line Engagement you pass to either of them before the D Line/ In the D Line or when threw the D Line
These Support player may also pass to another support player and so on
A Player making a line break has support players either side of them - they draw the fullback and pass to one of these players in support who scores
It's about having numbers in support of the ball carrier and options - Coach Robinson alludes to the drop off in the support area which of course is one factor that affects your offense and the ability to score points and create opportunities to score points
If ball carriers don't have players in support then it's easy for the opposition D to contend with - ends up being one out line engagement footy
Push Supports
Push Supports is another stat they use - not sure if these have been included with earlier support stats as some years the Roosters were near and well over 100 in the support stats ?
Similar to the above but these support players are not passed the ball - also maybe decoy runners
A basic example of push support
A player makes a line break and on either side of him are 4 players in support( 2 on each side) - he draws the fullback and passes to one of the support players who scores
Chalk up one for the support stat for the player in support who scores the try
The other 3 players who were also in support of the ball carrier although not needed or passed the ball would be deemed as push supports - so add 3 to the push supports on this play
They look at numbers of players in support of ball carriers - the effort of players without the ball to put themselves into a position to be a support player if required
I gather that is what Coach Robinson is saying and meaning " where running hard but we're not moving together" - the effort off the ball to support the ball carrier is not at the level it should be and thus the Roosters Offence is not putting pressure on the Opposition D. which ultimately affects the scoreboard
Line Engaged
A measure of how a teams players take the ball to the D line to make the Defenders Commit
Line engagement or digging into the D line as they call it is something commentators have picked up that the Roosters are not doing enough off
It's all related though to the above as well - The numbers of players pushing up in support of the ball carrier as if this is not happening any line engagement and opportunity to promote the ball in offense is lost without this support.
You don't want to play hot potato football as that is high risk football as far as increasing the chance of errors but you do need to move the Oppositions D around

Players need to follow and support the ball carrier and anticipate that they could be passed the ball or the ball carrier may make a line or half line break and back that break up in numbers - Don't pass the ball when no play is on- take the tackle and go again - seen in so many games players passing the ball to a player not expecting it or when they needed to take the tackle.

It's one area that we really need to lift in. Even on the odd occasion when we've made a line break or someone has poked through and looking for an offload, there's been no-one there.Last edited by Waylander; 05-19-2023, 01:43 PM.

Not every line break will result in a try but the Roosters have never been top shelf in that area in supporting line breaks in numbers - the push support as they call it
Last year Tedesco for instance made a number of line breaks and had no support and tries went begging- he would be one player you would hope as a coach that players would anticipate making a line break and be there in support in numbers.
It's all connected whether it's support for a line break or a ball carrier in D Traffic looking to offload or pass the ball - you need players in support.
Joining the Dots is the key to dig their way of their offense issues in scoring points and or creating point scoring opportunities. - Certainly need to improve their D as well
Anyway see what improves tonight in what will be a very tough game as I would say the Dragons will be up for it or should be.Last edited by King Salvo; 05-19-2023, 02:21 PM.

I wonder why?
The part you don't get Les and the problem for you is that you're 100% down on everything he does. Not a single thing he does is ever even a little bit right. When of course, what's probably reality is some of your rantings may have some validity. Of course a lot won't. But some might. But you make it so all or nothing mate. You talk about Robbo likes he's an idiot. A fool. Which or course he isn't. So you've painted yourself into this stupid corner like a stubborn child. So you're the fool bro.
It's somewhere in between what you think, and what the other guy thinks mate.Last edited by Batemans Bay Rooster; 05-19-2023, 05:24 PM.

Support play is down this year… hasn’t been in the past… there is a disconnect on the field and at the club… that’s what you quoted
Now why is that?
Mate I think I’ve been perfectly fair with Robbo… his performance has been very poor this year and was woeful in our ignominious end to last year… I’ve also given him plenty of credit for the past here so you’re obviously only listening to what you want to hear
Robbo needs to get back to what he’s good at or he can move on… I think that’s pretty clear… so hardly a corner to stand in
