I just looked up wikipedia to check the age requirements of the S.G.Ball comp (I always get Flegg & Ball ages mixed up!) and saw that the Storm play in S.G.Ball & more remarkably the WA Reds from Perth were admitted in 2010. How do the clubs manage flying these school kids around the country, yet we can't even get a National reserve grade competition, surely a stronger "reserve grade" comp should be the priority for the ARLC. Don't get me wrong, I think it's great that the SG Ball young fellas get this great experience, to travel & play at this level, but for the NSW & Qld State Cups to have such different standards surely is not good for the ARL & especially the NSWRL & the future of NSW SOO. It's already a farce that Qld get a leg up from the very early age of the minis comps, whereby they don't have the two pass rule before you can run with it, which has ruined a generation of NSW halves. C'mon ARLC let's see a proper National Reserve Grade comp, if the clubs can afford to transport & fund the U18's comp, then why can't they do the same with the all important "Reserve Grade" comp, especially now they have the extra $$$$ from the TV rights deal?!?

The clubs don't pay for this the NSWRL pay all travel costs and accommodation in Perth. Melbourne will be entering a U16 Harold Matthews team in season 2013. I think you'll find the NSWRL also pay costs for teams to travel to NZ to play the Vulcans.

I don't get that, the S.G.Ball comp is a national comp (I'm presuming this, as Perth & Melbourne play in it), but the NSWRL fund it? Are QLD teams involved in this comp too?? If so, surely the NSWRL don't fund QLD junior RL teams??

Anyway the point of my post was how do we have a National U18's comp when we can't even fund a National "Reserve Grade" comp? I should have said in my original post, how does the league (not the clubs) manage flying these school kids around the country, yet we can't even get a National reserve grade competition, surely a stronger "reserve grade" comp should be the priority for the ARLC.

          Good points Arty.
The way I see it is that HMs is lets have a little look, SG Ball is getting a bit serious and the U20s is lets get ready.
Reserve grade or NSW cup etc is like go over there, we might want you but maybe not.
The Internet is a place for posting silly things
Try and be serious and you will look stupid

SG Ball (U18) and Harold Matthews (U16) are run by the NSWRL. QLD have started their own versions Cyrill Connell and Mal Meninga Cups. Their competition is based loosely around the QCup teams, which covers the length of Qld. A national reserve grade competition won't get off the ground until the NSWRL and QRL old boys are removed or retire. Both organisations hate each other so it won't happen until the commission get around to it. This is probably low in the order of things to do. I know next year they are looking at a possible final series between the top 4 teams in QCup and NSW Cup but that's only in initial discussions. NT was keen to enter junior rep teams in Qld but Qld refuse to pay for them.

Thanks for that info DHS, sounds like QLD need to get an ARLC bullet up them, it won't help that John Grant is an avid QLDer!

That's how it looks KB, I wouldn't want to be a 21yo who misses the cut, there must be a huge amount of young blokes who miss out before they show their potential.

I always thought it was 15's for HM and 18 for ball?

                    Unless they've changed it recently?

It all changed when then NYC was introduced. It used to be Harold Matthews (U15), SG Ball (U17), Jersey Flegg (U19) and President Cup (U21 & U23 for a while). They made the Matts & Ball a year older along with Flegg but renamed it NYC.
