An old article on Chad Rennie. He get his wish....

Chad locks in future on the field

WHEN he was a kid Chad Rennie wanted to be one of the Roosters - he never thought he would end up playing for opposing team the West Tigers.

The 15-year-old is this week’s Northern District Times Junior Sports Star.

“Ever since I was four, I always wanted to play first grade,” Chad (pictured) said.

“My dad got me started, watching the game on TV and then I joined a team.”

Like many players, Chad had a modest start to the game, joining the Year 4 team at his school Putney Primary.

“The team were shy of numbers so they asked me to join,” Chad said.

He also joined the Holy Cross Rhinos team, which played on weekends.

When he started high school he joined the Holy Cross Metropolitan Catholic School team but still played for the Rhinos.

It was while he was playing for the Rhinos in 2008 that he was selected for the West Tigers junior development squad.

The Putney resident plays second row or lock.

“I like being defensive, I like tackling and getting totally involved in the game and being in the middle of things.”

Chad said playing for the West Tigers against other young promising teams from clubs such as the Roosters and South Sydney was tough but he loved the challenge.

He said he would still love to play for the Roosters, the NSW team and, of course, Australia.

Last year he captained the school team, trained up to three times a week for his footy teams and squeezed in gym sessions and running twice a week.

Chad was also an exceptional student, getting top marks in his exams, especially for maths and science, and also playing touch football.

But the big focus, he said, was on being selected for the West Tigers again this year.
