  • Boyd Cordner

The kid has been eased back into the team since suffering that confidence blow from the injury he suffered earlier in the season. Don't trust NRLStats, they have confused Dane and Boyd Cordner on a fair few occasions, these are the properly organised stats.

Before injury (all at second row or lock):

5 games, 1 try, 2 linebreaks, 2 linebreak assists, 1 try assist, average 14 runs for 123 metres, average 28 tackles for 2 missed, 5 offloads, 10 tackle breaks

After injury (all on bench, bar one game at five-eighth):

6 games, 0 tries, 0 linebreaks, 0 linebreak assists, 0 try assists, average 5 runs for 45 metres, average 14 tackles for 2.5 missed, 4 offloads, 6 tackle breaks

As you can see, there is an obvious drop-off in his figures since returning from injury. But remember, the kid is 17, those stats before his injury are far better than any other backrower in the NYC, and he is the youngest in the competition. I sincerely hope he finds his top form again, the kid is a huge talent.

Mack i know why you have good words for this kid...i have have watched him progress through Flegg and NYC...but it's a massive step up to NRL let him learn his trade in NSW cup with the big boys before he plays NRL....Don't worry about his figures in NYC its a claytons comp

Its is interesting, the step up from NYC to NRL, I believe there are a lot of players "killing" it in the NYC that are just not good enough for the NRL.

Its a mickey mouse comp to a certain extent and in alot of cases individual egos that out do an entire ST George teams ego.

There are some players that will kick on to great careers, but I just think alot will not.

Hardly played many minutes in his comeback games so it's not really fair too compare.

On the contrary, the NYC has produced the following players (qualification: played at least 5 first grade games this year):

Brisbane - Jharal Yow Yeh, Antonio Winterstein, Alex Glenn, Josh McGuire, Andrew McCullough

Canberra - Daniel Vidot, Justin Carney, Jarrod Croker, Travis Waddell, Joel Thompson

            Bulldogs - Jamal Idris

Sharks - Blake Ferguson, Matthew Wright, Jon Mannah, Nathan Stapleton

Titans - Kevin Gordon, David Mead, Will Matthews, Esi Tonga

Manly - Kieran Foran, Tony Williams

Storm - Kevin Proctor, Aiden Tolman, Joseph Tomane

Cowboys - Steve Rapira, James Tamou

Eels - Kris Keating, Tim Mannah, Taulima Tautai, Daniel Mortimer

Panthers - Lachlan Coote, Wade Graham, Tim Grant, Masada Iosefa, Joseph Paulo

Rabbitohs - Luke Capewell, Eddy Pettybourne

Roosters - Tom Symonds, Ben Jones, Jake Friend, Anthony Cherrington, Stanley Waqa

            Dragons - Chase Stanley

Warriors - Russell Packer, Ben Matulino, Kevin Locke

Tigers - Blake Ayshford, Tim Moltzen

All these players have become regular first graders this year this season, and they have been produced by the NYC system. I expect to see more coming through, in particular the forwards who will take some time to bloom before hitting their straps and being ready for first grade.

Mack, that's not actually that many when you consider the number of players that would have played in the Toyota Cup in the last season or two.

Ben Barba is an example of the gap - killed in in the NYC but has had limited NRL minutes. Where's he now, NSW Cup??

You'd expect to see high numbers progressing through as it's the feeder system for the NRL.

As pointed out by others, the gap between NYC and NRL is massive and it's not fair on these young players. The sooner they put in a decent Reserve Grade style competition the better. Too many players are lost because of this.

If they're not coming through NYC then they're not coming from many other competititons!

Ben Barba has a playing style that is limited in effectiveness in the NYC. He is a small roving player like Campbell, except he isn't as willing to put in his body on the line as much as Preston does. He reveled in the NYC where defense isn't as strong, but still...

Players who I am surprised haven't moved up as yet are Robert Worsely (prop, Bulldogs), Tohi Leha (prop - Sharks), John Kite (prop, Bulldogs), Shaun Fensom (lock, Raiders), Tim Robinson (prop/backrow, Eels), Daniel Harrison (backrow, Bulldogs), Matapau Poching (prop, Warriors) and Andrew Edwards (backrow, Raiders).

But notice something? They are all forwards. Forwards I feel will take a while AFTER the U20s before they find their feet in FG (Tolman and Packer being exceptions). If they want to make the NRL, they will have to accept playing in NSW Cup or QLD Cup for at least a year or two before playing regular FG.

Anyone know if the Arrive Alive Cup Final is being screened on TV this weekend? There are a few Roosters in the Matraville team - Boyd being one of them.
