It wasn't easy but the Sydney Roosters Holden Cup side battled hard to ensure a 44-18 victory over the Newcastle Knights at Hunter Stadium.

After establishing an early lead the Tricolours seemed to go in to cruise mode enabling the Knights to level the scores at 18-all midway through the match.

It was here the visitors resilience really kicked in and the boys powered home, scoring five late tries to seal an impressive victory.

Both young Roosters hookers, Alex Thomas and Bradley Dietz ran riot through the Newcastle defence, while captain Reece Martin and Willis Meehan were a constant three out wide.

In just his second game back from injury, Samisoni Langi was also brilliant, scoring a try and playing a role in a number of the visitors tries.

A brilliant forty metre weaving run from lock John Asiata set up hooker Alex Thomas to run away from the chasing back to score the first try of the match.

The home side hit back soon after, debutant Sione Matautia latched on to the end of a grubber to put the Knights within two.

Tricolours halfback Tyler Cornish then brilliantly set up his back line giving them plenty of space which opened up a massive gap for the clever number seven to put Jack Siejka over to extend the visitors lead.

It was a real grind for the next twenty as both sides worked hard to assert dominance on the match.

Showing why he is on the path to a successful NRL career, Samisoni Langi demonstrated real, class with a brilliant inside ball to set up fullback Kurt Capewell to stroll over untouched.

The game was then turned on its head when a quick burst of three quick tries, from the home side, either side of the break , including a double to Jake Mamo, had the scores all locked up with half an hour to play.

Desperate not to drop two games in a row the Tricolours found another gear, and on the back of some field position and a clever pass from hooker Bradley Dietz, centre Willis Meehan raced over the line to put the visitors in front by six.

Dietz was at it again a short time later when he scampered his way over form dummy half to once again put the Roosters in complete control of the match.

Three late tries to the visitors, including efforts from Langi, Goodsell and Martin sealed the result for the visitors.
