NEWTOWN READY TO LAUNCH NEWE JETS FOR THE 2014

There will plenty of new blood in the Newtown Jets playing ranks in the 2014 season. A number of players who have turned out with the Jets on a regular basis in 2013 and in recent seasons will no longer turn out for the Bluebags after opting to move on to other NRL, overseas and second-tier Clubs.

Some examples of the players moving on are Tinirau Arona to Cronulla, Adam Henry to the Bradford Bulls (UK), Michael Oldfield to the Catalan Dragons in France, Jack Bosden to Illawarra Western Suburbs and Josh Ailaomai to St George-Illawarra. Prolific try-scorers Nafe Seluini and Henare Wells have signed with the Burleigh Bears in the Queensland Cup and veteran forward Khalid Deeb has opted to retire from the playing ranks.

Jets coach Greg Matterson advises that there is a promising group of players who have been in intensive pre-season training for four days a week since early November, and they will be reinforced closer to the commencement of the competition rounds by arrivals from the Roosters NRL full-time squad as well as youngsters who have graduated from the Roosters under 20’s (Holden Cup) squad. The Jets are currently active in the player trading market and will be announcing some exciting new signings in the new year.

Coach Matterson is reportedly very pleased with how his pre-season squad members have applied themselves to the tough grind, and he is confident that the Jets will be highly competitive in the 2014 VB NSW Cup. The well-credentialed Sean Rudder, who played with the Jets in 2008 and 2009 as well as being a key member of the Newcastle Knights 2001 NRL premiership-winning team, has come on board as an assistant coach for the first half of the 2014 season.

Jets Director and major sponsor Terry Rowney says that one of the most satisfactory aspects of this off-season has been the extensive and effective review by the NRL of second-tier competitions like the NSW Cup, with several of the Newtown club’s submissions to the NRL review team being adopted. Organisationally the Jets are in a strong position and they clearly are well-respected members of the NSW Rugby League and the NSW Cup competition. Among the reforms made to the NSW Cup include stronger links to NRL partnership clubs, assistance to further professionalise the competition, plus the announcement of an end of season Super Bowl showdown between the NSW Cup and Queensland Cup premiership winners.

The Jets head into their 106th season in Rugby League confident that they are on course for a successful 2014 season. The Newtown club would like to extend best wishes for Xmas and the New Year to all their club members and supporters.

I love the sounds of those sections that I cut out above. Newtown did require a cleanout after a very poor ending to last season. There were too many players in there who were never a chance of making our 1st grade side this year or beyond, such as Yileen Gordon, Ben Jones (worst footballer I have ever seen!!), Deeb, Moujalli etc. Then there were players such as Henry and Arona who I just don't rate and would only get a game of 1st grade if there were quite a few out injured/suspended, and when given the chance would go ordinary!

Oldfield is reasonable but nothing brilliant, was signed by Smiffy and didn't seem to be highly rated by Robbo. Same goes with Seluini. Bosden was just too injury prone, the guy seemed to be out injured all the bloody time so was a waste of time having him. I know some on here rate Wells but I didn't. I only got to see 4 Jets games this year and everyone I was not impressed by him. He would do nothing special with the ball and made simple mistakes. Obviously Robbo didn't seem to rate him either.

In your reserve grade side you want some players (a decent amount) who are ready to step up to 1st grade straight up when needed. All the others ideally you want to see have a genuine potential to be able to be 1st grade Roosters high standard players within a few years. There is no point in having players who you do not see playing 1st grade for us, as they are wasting a position that could be taken up be someone who does have potential. You don't want to waste important development time and resources. If a player is say 26 and has never played 1st grade, than I don't see the point in keeping him as the chances are if he hasn't made it by then, than he never will.

I am excited to hear about how the Jets are currently active in the player market and will soon be announcing some exciting new signings. I really look forward to who they are going to be! By the sounds of things the Jets will be in for a great season next year, which is great for the Jets and can only benefit the Roosters.

It is good to know that finally the reserve grade competition is going to be taken more seriously, as it can only further strengthen the standard of the NRL. I know that I for one would rather watch reserve grade than the under 20's.

As for the draw for the Jets, I think their draw sux ar$e!! A bye the very 1st round is a joke! I was hoping for at least half their games (all would have been great!!) played before Roosters matches, instead there is only 2. Also I was hoping that at least 5 of their games were going to be televised, instead only a pathetic 2 are.
The year 2013 marks the beginning of the Roosters next 'decade of excellence', and it will prove to be more successful than the last!

            Here's looking at you, kid.

It doesnt matter who they sign, because Norths (Souths' feeder team) will win the comp next year.
                      The NSW Cup is corrupt.

I received an E-mail today (24.DEC) from the Newtown Jets.

The Newtown RLFC has signed Josh Davis (centre and second-rower) and David Harris (lock and second-rower) from the Wests Tigers club. Both Davis and Harris played with Balmain Ryde-Eastwood in the 2012 VB NSW Cup Grand Final against Newtown.

Here’s the final Jets newsletter for 2013 …
The Newtown Jets extend best wishes for Christmas and the New Year to all their members, supporters and friends. The club looks forward to seeing you all in 2014 and to the prospect of another absorbing VB NSW Cup season.
In training news, the Jets finished the 2013 segment of their pre-season program with an exacting hit-out at La Perouse on Sunday morning. The boys will resume their pre-season training regimen on January 7th.
The 2014 VB NSW Cup draw has been released and can be viewed on this link: http://bit.ly/18HB6N1
Features of the 2014 draw include Newtown having a bye in Round One; the Frank Hyde Shield matches against North Sydney are at Henson Park on Saturday, 10th May and at North Sydney Oval on Saturday, 7th June. The Newtown Jets annual Reunion Day will be slightly earlier next year - Newtown will take on Wests Tigers at Henson Park on Saturday, 2nd August. The VB NSW Cup Grand Final is to be played on Sunday, 28th September at a venue to be determined, with the National Grand Final (between the NSW Cup premiers and the Queensland Cup premiers) to be played at ANZ Stadium on NRL Grand Final day, Sunday, 5th October.
The NSWRL has issued some explanatory notes on the 2014 VB NSW Cup draw and these can be viewed on: http://bit.ly/1e57B5I
The Jets have long been regarded as being at the cutting edge of Rugby League merchandise and street wear, and three sensational new T-shirts designs have been released. Take a look at this outstanding new range now on: http://bit.ly/18l7MvE
2014 Newtown Jets memberships are still on sale and the rationale for taking out a Jets membership remains as compelling as ever. Check out the range of membership packages on: http://bit.ly/J3K6jP
