It wasn't all good news for the Bulldogs in the opening round of the Junior Representative season with Newtown scoring in the final moments to defeat the Bulldogs in SG Ball 20-16.

The Bulldogs defended for the absolute vast majority of the first half, but still led 6-4 at the break when Aidan Sever finished off a fine team try with Ali Hijazi converting. It was all Newtown in attack and only excellent defence by the Bulldogs restricted them to one try. Their only try coming from a long range effort by Jack Litteljohn when he scooped up a loose ball and ran 70m to score. The Jets had two tries disallowed and only great defence by the Bulldogs withstood their attack and eventually grab the lead right on the half-time siren.

The second half opened up much more with the lead changing or squaring up several times as neither side could put each other away. Newtown leveled up the scores with halfback Jacob Miller landing an easy penalty goal from in front of the posts. The Jets regained the lead with replacement outside back Michael Mizrahie scoring the first of two tries as the Jets found plenty of gaps on the Bulldogs left side defence. Jacob Miller was unable to convert with Newtown leading 10-6.

Bulldogs centre Ali Hijazi scored the Bulldogs second try after good lead up work by fullback Nathan Massey. With the scores locked up at 10-all Ali Hijazi couldn't put the Bulldogs back in the lead missing his conversion attempt from outwide.

Michael Mizrahie scored his second try as the Jets clawed their way back to a 14-10 lead and the match seemingly in their bag despite Jacob Miller not being able to convert the try.

The Bulldogs scored late in the game through centre Ratu Tagive with good hands and skill involved in the wet conditions and more so since the Bulldogs handling was pretty poor throughout the match. Aidan Sezer landed a superb sideline conversion to push the Bulldogs to a 16-14 lead and victory seemed to be in their grasp.

A handling error mate in the match allowed Newtown one final chance to attack the Bulldogs line and replacement Boyd Cordner charged onto a well-timed pass to crash his way over for the Jets to go out to a 18-16 lead. Jacob Miller extended the lead to four points with his second goal of the match and the score remained 20-16 as Newtown played out the final stages.

Bulldogs SG Ball Coach Jason Williams said that the Bulldogs effort in defence in the early stages took it out of them later in the match. Williams highlighted the Bulldogs poor control as one of the reasons why they lost the match and said they will need to improve on that. Williams found several positives despite the loss with the Bulldogs goal line defence being very impressive. Williams highlighted Dale Finucane, Mark Gordon and Teni Waipouri as impressive performers.
