Roosters and Jets junior reps make the finals
Friday, April 17, 2009
The Sydney Roosters decision to revive their junior representative teams has reaped immediate reward after both qualified for the final series starting this Saturday.
The Roosters Harold Matthews and SG Ball sides were initially axed due to the club’s cost cutting measures, which were brought about by the increased poker machine tax and the introduction of new smoking laws.
Easts Leagues club’s continued financial support to the junior league and the Roosters successful partnership with fellow foundation club Newtown made it possible for both teams to take the field this season.
The results are testament to the hard work by all involved in keeping the under 16 and under 18 sides viable.
The National Junior Representatives enters their round of 16 playoff this weekend at venues across Sydney and Brisbane as the nation’s elite junior teams compete for a spot in the quarter finals.
NSW teams enter a top 12 elimination this weekend, which will leave the best six teams from the Harold Matthews Cup (Under-16) and SG Ball Cup (Under-18) to progress to the quarter finals.
Queensland’s Cyril Connell Cup (Under-16) and Mal Meninga Cup (Under-18) champions will be decided this weekend. The top two Queensland teams will then progress to the quarter finals next week.
The Roosters Harold Matthews Cup side put together a succession of mid-season wins to press their claims for a finals spot. The under 16s will face a tough task against Parramatta on Saturday 18 April at CUA Stadium in Penrith from 12:00pm.
The Jets SG Ball Cup debutants finished the regular season in an impressive sixth spot. They face a battle with the Balmain this Saturday 18 April at CUA Stadium in Penrith from 1:30pm.
