  • Sydney Roosters sign 136kg teenager Tai Tuivasa

MEET the Sydney Roosters' teenage bulldozer.

He might only be 17, but schoolboy rugby league talent Tai Tuivasa packs a knockout punch.

The Mt Druitt product stands 190cm tall and hits the scales at 136kg.

Sydney Roosters recruitment manager Peter O'Sullivan describes Tuivasa as a "raw talent".

"He is bit like Mark Tookey. They both wind-up and hit-up the ball at full speed," O'Sullivan said.

"I've been watching his age group for some time now and he scores an inordinate amount of tries in junior league.

"He's got terrific leg speed and great footy awareness. If he trims down the kilos and keeps up the hard work I have no doubt that he will play first grade. He will play under-20s next year if he keeps up the form."

When The Daily Telegraph caught-up with Tuivasa at the Redfern PCYC gym, he dwarfed the heavy bags and the doorway.

Fighting and footy is all he has known growing up as a young kid in western Sydney.

The former St Dominic's student made his fight debut with a stunning 22-second knock-out against Daniel Fawkes at Penrith RSL.

Tuivasa has spent the past 18-months training at the Elite Fight Gym, sparring with cult figure cage fighter Lucas "Big Daddy" Browne.

Five experienced MMA fighters didn't want to fight him because of his size.

"Half of the people in the crowd that night were my family," Tuivasa said.

"I remember feeling pretty calm before and during the fight. I kneed him a couple of times, he got up and came at me and I knocked him out."

Tuivasa, who has a Samoan father and Aboriginal mother, was poached by the Sydney Roosters from Penrith Panthers last year.

He has dropped 9kg since joining the club, which put him on a strict new diet and training regime.

While Tuivasa's second MMA fight hasn't been scheduled, the giant lad said he was keen to step back in the ring next year.

This guy is a massive unit, the story doesnt do justice to him in person, it is funny how the Roosters "poached" him, my mail is penrith told to to lose weight then come back, as they do to most of there jumiors.

Don't like the whole - "heavy is great" motto in the media.

He is a big boy but he's overweight if anything. It will work in the 20s but will get exposed in grade.

i know i was looking at some of the comments on the story on the tele website all with the same crap about how we steal other peoples players and it shouldnt be allowed, how other clubs develop the talent and we just steal it in time for first grade. The funny thing is that since POS came on board we have won SG ball and Harold Matts premierships almost every year. As far as im concerned, irrespective of whether we 'poach' these youngsters or not no one with a half a brain can seriously try and assert that these players had already been developed by other clubs. Look at this kid, he is 136kgs ffs and is 17 and according to you got told to get lost by penrith so if anything we are trying to 'develop' him into first grade material.

As far as im concerned, any player signed that is 18 or less that we sign cannot be considered poached or already developed unless of course they are already playing first grade ala inglis/folau. At that age you havent even finished growing/are fully developed/not even played much NYC so i cant fathom how other club and supporters can rubbish us for signing these sorts of players. Even fringies like Linnett i think we developed. Just because you were born in a cerain area does not mean that irrespective of what age you choose to play for another club, you are deemed to have been poached or already developed by that club

Tuivasa also had disciplinary issues at Penriff and was told to toe the line or be cut. Enter POS.

My son plays in the Penriff district, so I went & got my trainers ticket at CUA Stadium

The bloke was saying that even if a good kid doesn't get picked up by the Riff, they are always some of the first picked up by teams like the Roosters, Dogs & Eels.

They actively tell kids who aren't going to make it to go to other clubs, so I don't know how these idiots can call it poaching.

Penrith apparently seem to stick with 2 or 3 clubs, if you aren't part of them then its very hard to get selected.
One of the reasons why Glenmore Park have an association with the Roosters.

Yep... clubs are definitely St Marys & St Clair. And I'd add on Brothers as a third.

Tai is a big boy... BS took him under his wing last year whilst in Ball.

He wasn't poached... Penrith flicked him.
