The cost of securing the most promising juniors

an interesting article on NRL.com this afternoon about our former junior David Hala who couldn't settle in Sydney and joined the Broncos, the article suggested we outlayed $100k to sign him as a 16y/o.

for those wondering why we are having salary cap problems, one can only imagine what we had to pay the likes of Moga and now Roger Tuivasa-Sheck to secure them from the more than half of the rest of the competition that were trying to secure them.

we are now in a position where we possibly hold the highest rated 18 y/o outside backs from both Australia and New Zealand, nothing is certain in rugby league when dealing with young players (Ryan Williamson perfect example) but geez its about time we finally get our shit together and finally transfer some of this junior potential into first grade results.

not sure about everyone else, but i've got my fingers crossed Jason Taylor can play a big part in the development of these two young kids (via NYC) and we can start the long slow process of building a young core group of talented players that will lead us to our next premiership.

$100K is cheap compared to the extraordinary amount that Sticky paid some 16 year old a few years ago to play for the Sharks (Faluga or something similar). I don't think he played a first grade game.

Signing young kids is always a risk but I'd rather spend salary cap dollars on them than pay overs for older hasbeens living off a reputation gained 5 years ago.

The young blokes tend to bring enthusiasm and energy to a playing group which in the right environment can be infectious and revitalise the older blokes.

Really good article Fletch , guess its a juggling act for management to establish a strong playing roster for the future yet maintain a competitive team for the present.

I guess when signing juniors at the expense of signing established players it is important they are 100% the juniors can handle a lifestyle transition if they are moving from interstae or across the ditch, as you highlighted with the Hala example. However no matter how much homework you do you will never get a 100% success rate. Guess if you get 7/10 right, meaning players that handle the transition I would be happy with that.

I take your point about bringing in juniors and establishing them into first graders. It looks llike they are doing it as a 3 pronged attack, signing fresh juniors, (Moga, Tuivasa-Sheck ), signing juniors with potential from other clubs BJ from saints, JWH from manly, and Tasi from manly, top this with the odd expierienced first grade signing and it may just prove very successful in the near future.

Time will tell.

Apart from paying overs what annoys me is thhe hype that come with some of these kids that they never live up to...

Of course they're never going to live up to the hype.

That shouldn't annoy you, you should just judge them on what they do during their time in first grade and keep an objective opinion.

I doubt taylor could develop much to either of the two above mentioned players, both of them play off the top of their heads (uncoachable ) Whereas Taylor played a structured role as a half. He can only pick out faults in their game and hope to eradicate any problems they might have. He could surely teach either of them in their
kicking, goal kicking abilities as there were few superior in these talents to Taylor.

Yep spot on, IMO we have the potential to win a premiership in 2012/13. Provided injuries are at a minimum.

Junior development, where do I start.... (maybe I shouldn't but then .....)

There are 2 parts to RL, the development of the kids with a view to bringing some of then onto the NRL and the second is keeping the game alive and giving kids a game to play and looking after the local clubs and players.

Unfortunately its all about the first part, not just at the Roosters, its the almost the whole focus of the game.

I have seen too many good players bypassed because they are local and not scouted out of area.

This!!! Is it doesn't matter what you pay a 16yo. it doesn't affect the salary cap unless he plays NRL. NYC have a salary cap as well, but you will find the majority of that will be eaten up by the supposed superstars with the majority of the kids lucky to get $10k a season.
