The Jets are into their third week of pre-season training in preparation for the 2012 VB NSW Cup season. The boys will train up until Christmas and then take a short break before resuming early in the New Year. 2011 identities seen back at training include Chris Enahoro, Francis Vaioutu, Byron “Bizza” Ford, Ryan Verlinden, Kurt Kara, Khalid Deeb, Ahmad Ellaz, Isaac Maliota, Boyd Strickland and Sammy Brunton. In addition there are several players from the 2011 Bundaberg Red Cup premiers Cabramatta training with Newtown, as well as a number of other triallists with NSW Cup and Toyota Cup experience gained at other clubs. Add to this those players in full-time training with the Sydney Roosters who will also challenge for positions in Newtown’s top 17 for Round One of the 2012 VB NSW Cup.
Newtown’s coaching staff for 2012 is Greg Matterson (Head Coach) along with Darryl Neville and Daniel Wortley (Assistant Coaches). Sean Rutgerson has moved on and we thank Sean for his tremendous input during 2011. John Zollo is the 2012 Head Strength and Conditioning Coach and Sam Mavrovelis backs up as the Team Manager. The 2012 VB NSW Cup competition is greatly enhanced by the return of Illawarra (partnered of course with the St George-Illawarra NRL franchise) and the arrival of Mt Pritchard Mounties (partnered with the Canberra Raiders).
Newtown’s popular and long-serving President and Director Barry Vining had the great honour of receiving a most prestigious award from the International Federation of Freight Forwarders (FIATA) at that organisation’s recent World Congress in Cairo. Barry has been a senior official with Newtown for more than 30 years and has also been a Vice-President of FIATA for an extended period.
