Moga has 'kicked the door in', says Smith

SYDNEY Roosters coach Brian Smith says 18-year-old centre Tautau Moga has “kicked the door off the hinges” in staking his claims for a starting spot in Round 1.

With South Sydney at ANZ Stadium on Monday March 5 the goal, Smith revealed the teen has earned his chance on his own merits, and not as replacement for Shaun Kenny-Dowall and his kidney injury.

“It doesn’t open the door for him, mate he’s kicked the door off the hinges and it has nothing to do with Shaun,” Smith declared at the launch of the Foundation Cup trial against the Wests Tigers.

“I have no shadow of a doubt that Tautau has got that (talent), it’s not talent that’s up for debate - blind Freddy can see how talented he is.

"It’s the opportunity to see him make those repeat efforts and see how he goes when the 80 minutes is thrown up.

“Particularly backing up from one day to another through pre-season and then one week to another in first grade, the competition has little to do with talent and a lot to do with the other stuff it takes to be a first grader and he’s ticked all the boxes so far."

The Queensland product, signed until the end of 2014, was a solid performer in the Belmore trial against Canterbury-Bankstown last weekend and will be given another opportunity to shine when the tricolours face the Wests Tigers at Campbelltown on Saturday.

Despite playing a safe game, Smith said he is being cautious, not to over-expose him to the rigours of first grade too early in his career.

“He’s been outstanding but there’s only one place you can tick those boxes and we’re about to find out whether he can or whether he needs to take a bit of time,” he said.

“Everybody loves the fairytale story of a young kid making first grade straight off and doing everything right but the reality is sometimes it’s a bit different to that.

"It won’t disappoint me because it will make him like 99 percent of other footballers who need to go back and start again and re-build their game in some areas and just take the time that it takes to develop the tenacity and toughness to play first grade.”

Kenny-Dowall will miss this weekend’s trial after lacerating his kidney at training resulting in two nights in hospital.

“A lacerated kidney is not the sort of thing you mess about with,” Smith said.

“He’s out of hospital but he’s resting for a week and doctors will re-assess him but he would be unlikely I would think to start the season.”

Origin prospect Martin Kennedy is also unavailable through injury, battling an adductor strain while BJ Leilua and Tom Symonds were missing from last week’s trial and considered no certainties for Saturday’s match.

Smith backs Mortimer to shine at Roosters

Sydney Roosters coach Brian Smith believes Daniel Mortimer will thrive during the 2012 NRL season after putting his year from hell with Parramatta behind him.

Mortimer moved to the Roosters at the end of last season having been frozen out by Eels coach Stephen Kearney less than two years after helping the side to a grand final.

It was a remarkable fall from grace for the 22-year-old, who turned his back on a big-money move to Canterbury in 2010 to sign a lucrative deal with the Eels, only to end his career with the club playing NSW Cup for Wentworthville.

The writing was on the wall for Mortimer in round 24 when Kearney opted to move Jarryd Hayne to five-eighth to cover for the injured Jeff Robson rather recall the young playmaker.

Smith said he'd been impressed with the character Mortimer has shown since signing and believes his versatility will be a big plus to the Roosters.

"He's a guy trying to rebuild his career after what must have been a tough year for him to endure," Smith said.

"From day one he never looked like he lost confidence. He saw it as a new opportunity and has fitted in straight away."

Mortimer scored a try in the Roosters' trial win over Canterbury at Belmore on Sunday where he started the game as fullback and spent time in the halves and at hooker.

Smith hinted that he may fill a utility role this season but didn't rule out using him again as a rake.

"He's played five-eighth and half and although dummy-half was a bit new to him, he played quite a bit of it at Parramatta without wearing the number nine," he said.

"In the 2009 season where they did well he did a lot of his best work out of dummy-half.

"We're excited about what he brings to our crew, he gives us a bit of variety and he's an outstanding young bloke and as good a trainer as I've seen."

The Roosters will play their final trial match before their season kicks off against South Sydney on March 5 against Wests Tigers at Campbelltown on Saturday.

They will be without Shaun Kenny-Dowall, who's recovering from a lacerated kidney sustained in training last week.

Smith admitted its's likely to keep him out of the round one clash with Souths, but is confident giant prop Martin Kennedy will be fit.

However, Kennedy, who missed the second half of last year with a foot injury, will miss the Tigers game due to an abductor problem.

At least it is a different injury if that is any consolation.

For all the flak Smith cops, there can be no disputing that he is fantastic at managing young talent.

Some will point to the Hayne incident and Brian not promoting him to first grade at first opportunity, however it's been evident that although a freak on the field - mentally he was not ready for first grade.

Same as Snowden, who self-admitedly was not physically ready to play football at an elite level.

Putting in consistant performances is something a lot of rookies are not capable of and it is detrimental to a football club given the nature of the schedule.

From all reports it seems 'mentality' is a strength of Moga's

Well said. I'll admit I'm biassed as a Smith fan and he does cop a lot of flak because he hasn't won a premiership but managing young footballers is one of his true strengths as a coach.

LOL! I've gone on record as being a Smithy fan all of last year. But you're right everyone's full of optimism and anticipation at the moment. Once the season proper starts I'm sure things will get back to normal. Except for Fred68 - he never changes!
