Interim report
What a way to start a season! Seven great tries, including three by Tom Symonds who starting the try-scoring fest and then scored the first two tries in the second half.
The only blemish on the Newtown game came mid second half. The Jets led 12-0 and looked in control, then errors and poor discipline gave Wentworthville the field position they needed to crash through twice and even the scores, 12-12.
What a performance!
The really pleasing aspect of the Newtown performance was the way the tries were constructed - strong running by the forwards, both the props and the back rowers, speedy service from dummy half, great backing up by all players and dazzling skill in the halves and backs.
The right-hand side of the field saw most of the action in the second half. Daniel Tupou make a great break on the right, threading his way down the touchline and finally passing to mark Kheirallah who sped away for a try.
Another second half try ended with right-hand side action but started with our fullback, Alofa Alofa making huge metres as he brought the ball back from a Magpies kick. The fullback's brilliant side-stepping, speed and power seemed to mesmerise the defence. Two more metre-gaining hitups followed from Ryan Verlinden and Tom Symonds and then five-eighth, Jack Littlejohn, put up a high, well-placed bomb. Over near the right-hand touchline, winger, Daniel Tupou, soared high above the pack to snatch the ball and pass quickly to Kurt Kara who dashed away to score behind the posts.
Wenty's only score in the second half was a late try wide out, again on the right-hand side.
Let's hope our Jets can maintain this momentum throughout the season!
Match summary
Newtown Jets 40 [Tom Symonds 3, Alofa Alofa, Adam Henry, Mark Kheirallah, Kurt Kara tries; Mark Kheirallah 6 goals]
Wentworthville Magpies 18 [3 tries; 3 goals]
Half-time: Jets led 18-12 after Adam Henry scored with just seconds to go.
Most of the game was played in blazing sunshine. The players battled heat and humidity until the skies clouded over in the second half and very light rain fell intermittently, bringing some relief.
A large group of happy Newtown supporters greeted an equally happy band of players in the traditional way on the western fence after the game and as we all left the ground, the victory song of the Jets roared out from the Jets dressing room..
