  • Four best pigs in the comp.

Having a nice quiet night in with the footy, i decided to ponder just who the best forwards in the competition are:

    - Paul Gallen - i deadset cringe everytime i think about how this bloke would do at a better club. True to his testament, he hasn't complained once, and instead of folding like the rest of the team, he put his hand up every single game. The bloke is going through superhero numbers. Discipline was a problem for him before, however this year he is content to just get into the trenches and get a quick play of the ball. All this while not losing any toughness. A cool note, if you discount Pyles, Gallen gets through as much work as any 2 of our forwards at any game.

-Aiden Tolman - By far the best prop in the game, big minutes, big workrate, big heart. Not only is he safe around the ruck, you'll note that a lot of his hit-ups are coming out of trouble - a job usually destined for the backs. Should be one of the first few players selected for Origin. An even bigger achievement considering his age.

    - 70centsalitre- This bloke is the epitome of a true professional. Week after week he busts out massive yardage and cleans up the ruck. Playing in a relatively young and erratic Penrith squad, he is the rock. No doubt will have a big Origin AGAIN this year.

    - Nate Myles - Single handedly, holding our flimsy pack together. This bloke needs to cop 3 injuries in a row in order to actually get him off the field. He is an absolute workhorse, who is clinical about the ruck, there are a few players similar in the league however he is different in the fact that his tackling technique is second to none. Classic shoulder into the ribs stuff. Another great quality is his commitment, next time when we concede a linebreak - note who is the first one to give chase.

Notable mention - Bryce Gibbs - I think Myles edges him out just on the fact that Gibbs has potent pigs around him. However, any prop that plays such big minutes, in a Tigers team that move about the field more than any other team, has got receive big accolades. Was watching him tonight, dead set, the bloke ran and tackled himself into the ground.

    Thoughts ? Opinions ?

All are good forwards. Agree with everything you say, except for labelling Aiden Tolman the best prop in the game (and "by far," at that).

Civoneciva and Hannant edge him out for mine. Hannant, as much as I can't stand the bloke, has a phenomenal workrate. That game against Souths, I think it was, he was absolutely everywhere. Civoneciva is incredible. The guy just doesn't look like getting any worse, he just motors and motors and motors.

Tolman is very good. He will one day, probably, be great. But at the moment, he's not the best prop in the game.

I think you have to give credit to guys like Hindmarsh, who are simply all commitment, heart and hard work.

On another note, as for rookies, Shaun Fensom is pretty damn good - 50 tackles a game, big ticker.

As much as I hate to say, I think The Mormon is right up there.

He backs up week to week, is always in the top two or three hit ups / tackles
Has a calm head, an all round great worker.

      Glenn Stewart.
Hits hard, rarely misses tackles, attacking player with a good passing game.

BF, I'm going by this season. I think Tolman has been the best prop.

Agree with most of the above except Glenn Stewart, doesn't run straight like he should. Good player on his day.

Hannant is without a doubt the new Webcke - he is the ideal prototype for the modern-day prop. Matthew Scott is a strong unit too.

Not a bad step / swerve for a big unit though.

I rate Stewart, he should be playing backrow for NSW instead of Hindmarsh or Ryan. This is because he has a huge defensive workrate, can break the line and set up tries too.

              2007 - 26 games, 3 tries, 7 linebreaks, 3 LB assists, 2 try assists, 45 offloads, 84 tackle breaks, average 16 runs for 110 metres, 32 tackles for 3 missed

              2008 - 26 games, 7 tries, 8 linebreaks, 13 LB assists, 8 try assists, 27 offloads, 97 tackle breaks, average 15 runs for 101 metres, 29 tackles for 4 missed

              2009 - 23 games, 3 tries, 6 linebreaks, 12 LB assists, 6 try assists, 23 offloads, 76 tackle breaks, average 13 runs for 86 metres, 34 tackles for 3 missed

This year he is floating at about 13 runs for 88 metres, and 31 tackles per game again. As you can see, he tends to only make about 6-7 metres per hitup, a fair bit lower than more notable running forwards like Gallen, Watmough, Creagh and Hoffman (regularly 7.5-8.5 metres per hitup), but his ability to offload and create linebreaks is notable.

                He is a noted ball-player.

I guess I just don't see him as tough as the four listed, doesn't take anything away from him though. Quality player who has the added bonus of playing alongside Lyon all game.

Sam Burgess in place of Civonoceva.

But I agree with the other 3

The four best props in the NRL are Petero Civoniceva, Steve Price (when fit), Ben Hannant, and Matthew Scott. It is no coincidence that the first three are the three QLD frontrowers, and Scott is most likely the player to take up the reigns from Price after he retires (with Shillington or Tronc replacing Civoniceva).

As for the NSW props, well, our pigs don't exactly fill me with confidence. Especially for State of Origin this year. These are the forwards we should be looking at:

Douglas - huge ticker, but more of a workhorse
Snowden - massive potential, but a bit sluggish
Weyman - probably the best prop in NSW at the moment
Tolman - tremendous talent, but a work in progress
Poore - inconsistent, poor form this year so far
Galloway - always been a talent, but no consistency
Henderson - big unit, mobile, needs gametime
Hunt - another strong player, still a bit raw

Ryles - solid, but old and injury prone
Bailey - ultra-consistent but lacks impact or dominance
Hodgson - good club prop, not enough impact for rep level
Tilse - good club prop, not enough impact for rep level
White - good club prop, too soft at rep level
Kite - good club prop, too soft at rep level
                        Cross - rubbish
                        Gibbs - rubbish
                        King - rubbish
                        Perry - rubbish

Weyman? Really? The bloke is tough but can't keep going for long periods.

Next time tigers play, just keep an eye on Gibbs, I think you'll be surprised.

Tolman is by far and away the best prop NSW have, I don't care about his age, he looks like a player that will do his job no matter the arena.
